We are travelling to Spain, Santander by ferry in early April, the 'plan' is to travel to Southern Spain to see family and some sun.
Looking at Google maps it appears to be a straightforward drive. A 66 etc,,

Has anyone got some suggestions regarding aires close to the route south and some suggestions as what to see and visit.

The plan is to get south quickly and then travel back north slowly, we have in total 80 days to enjoy Spain and Portugal...

TIA

Dave

You are getting out and about this year aren’t you?

Good for you(y)

Agree with A66 route, if you want to get there in two days then Caceres is about a 6 hour (ish) drive from memory and would leave about another 5/6 hours (ish) to get to the south (thats what we do), if you want an extra day Salamanca is a great town to visit on the way down.

Caceres has a campsite just off the main road there, Salamanca (don quijote) about a 15 min bus ride into town, we have done both campsites. Can’t comment for Aires.

Going to find this a useful thread as planning similar for end of Aug to late Sept.

Thanks for that.

I have family in La Linea and thought North Spain may not be either open or be a bit cool.
We are not in a rush, if it takes 7 days, so be it.

If heading to Portugal we like to boot it across to Hotel Regio 4 or 5 hours from the Ferry I think.

You check in to the campsite via the hotel concierge, so it doesn't matter what time you arrive. We've rocked up at midnight before now.

Always loads of pitches free, facilities are all a bit old and naff. However, it's a short cycle ride into Salamanca, which is one of our favourite cities for eating and drinking. We once went to Regio to overnight and stayed for 4 nights because of festivals in the city.

I hope it looks like that in early March. We are using it on way back to El Ferry. I think Otto has made a deviation via Ayamonte this morning .Makes the golf interesting(not). One thing Jim do they allow early departs. I think BF arrival is midday.DW

In Dec 2016 I stopped in a small campsite in Zarautz on the North coast(18C) just before San Sebastian. The price was good, food/bar reasonable and view stunning. (see pictures first from pitch, second showing beach with campsite on top of the hill in background, good surfing town)

Then stopped at Burgos, Regio campsite Salamanca (cold showers but bus at gate), Evora and then Tourist Campo on the Algarve for Christmas. All campsites I afraid but, then, in ACSI book (except Tourist Campo) so reasonably priced.

Yes it's very much like a transit site, people leaving early doors is quite normal

Another vote for Regio, visited on our first ever motorhome trip in February 2010, it was snowing, the fountains were frozen and we loved it, bus from site into Salamanca, have been back since in better weather. They had a 2 tier menu when we were there, thought we would give it a try, cheapskates that we were went for the cheaper option, only difference was where you were seated in the restaurant 🤣
