My Safeguard policy is due to renew at the end of the month, so I am in the midst of a comparison exercise. One of the curious answers I got when chasing up a quote from NFU was that they would not offer any breakdown cover (UK or Europe) for my 6,39m long Fiat Ducato van (La Strada Avanti EB) because it was too long. According to their documentation and the follow-up clarification phone call, they do not offer breakdown and recovery for anything longer than 5.5m. Can this be true? Has anyone else run into this problem?

I’m with them and yes no breakdown offers. Great company and good price for my policy. I get extra discount for home and car insurance. My bank supply breakdown for can and car. Uk and Europe. Full recovery.

They don't do breakdown on any motorhome.
I don't find it unusual, why is it a problem?

My cheapest option was NFU and a separate Green Flag policy for European recovery. I seem to remember that it was quite hard to find their size/weight limits. I've got a 6m, 3.5t van.

Yep I’m with nfu no breakdown cover for me at 7.5 m 4250 kg but I thought they did up to 6.4 m ? But seem fair for good cover and price . Claimed last for A-class windscreen no problems.
I have break down cover with lv at £49 plus 40 excess if I call them out
also eu cover included.
Home start /assist etc .

NFU - biggest factor for me is I can call or email and get answers usually same day.

Eg - might change wife's car on same policy - send them a list of registrations and they feed back what difference it would.make. Very refreshing to deal with real people.

I use personal cover through Mayday

Yes exactly the same as you, never heard of anyone else with lv breakdown, they are very good to deal with but how good they are if we breakdown we are yet to find out.

I had NFU with my 36FT RV .. including EU cover. , which I used when we had a small accident. and at present with my PVC

I think it depends on which office you use

I used Louth

See Louth we’re not helpful for us Jim, but the Chichester branch were. Strange isn’t it 🤷‍♂️

We are with NFU. Breakdown is separate through GEM. The latter warn that there may be a delay if you need recovery. Add on for abroad with Europ Assist if needed. Last time I had to call them in the UK, it was a failed starter battery (3 years old). They got me started and I went straight to Hadleigh Tyres for a replacement.

We did use them in February this year whilst in south France , moved van twice before leaving aire and third time wouldn’t start ? .
They arranged local garage to come out which took them about 40 minutes , use power pack and started first time ? . No idea what problem was but I did park next to exit barrier then wouldn’t restart.
Anyway before they came they started arranging a hotel for us that except a dog ( in our case it’s class as small pony ) just incase garage couldn’t fix.
So our experience was excellent with them 👍

Yes they cover Europe for insurance but not breakdown, no breakdown even in UK although they do breakdown for cars.

My insurance is with a insurance company (NFU)
And
My breakdown is with a breakdown company (RAC)

One company does one job the other does another when it comes to it why try and mix???

Breakdown cover in UK is not needed for us as if we breakdown in UK we just fetch it back ourselves.
