I've just done a week away with my grandson in the Mainly midlands and North West. A couple of times I found myself berating my phone GPS and going old school and keeping myself on main roads just with road numbers and general direction. What is the best type of GPS to use with a motorhome to avoid getting into situations where I'm having to turn it around and go back. It got very frustrating this week and luckily my years spent driving commercial vans put ne in good stead to able to manoeuvre the old boy out of a tight spot....

Phone apps specially Google maps are designed for cars smaller vehicles.

Best option is purchase a satnav specifically for moho lorries etc where you can enter your height, weight etc.

Magic Earth app has a truck option but I'm not sure how reliable it is. I have used it a fair bit and it seems ok but I have used google maps all this summer and its been pretty good. However I streeview a lot of my routes before setting off and tweak them on the laptop where necessary before sending the route to my phone. 90% of this tour has been the Alps and Pyrenees so its pretty crucial to do that.

We found a Garmin Camper sat nav best out of several we found but it isn't fool proof at all even though height, weight &c could be entered.
The main problem is that road widths are not recorded on any of the mapping software available.

As suggested in the previous post, checking routes in advance is a good idea where away from main roads.

There are no sat nav available or other map tools that will reliably avoid narrow roads, this is due to the data they all operate from . They are pretty good at weight limits, bridge heights, and even posted width restrictions eg 6' 6" max width but unfortunately narrow roads are too variable .
