I'm doing a tour around southern Ireland next month and hoping to get a couple of days fishing (coarse). Anyone know of any sites on either river or lakeside? Thanks

I've coarsed fished every county in Ireland, but never been to a site with lakes or rivers on them and if there are any they're probably fished out... but there's literally 100s of 1000s of lakes & river stretches throughout the whole country and parking overnight near them is no issue, for big tench & bream try any of the East Clare lakes, and narrow parts of the Shannon for example Lanesborough, Killaloe, O'Briens bridge are some, shoals of Roach & Rudd can be found on the bigger stretches of the rivers, Perch & pike are everywhere try to stay in the middle of Ireland sort of between County Leitrim & County Clare either side of those counties is mostly game fishing, Salmon Trout etc the lower Blackwater County Cork has Dace & Rudd etc but again mainly game fish, the river Barrow has some decent coarse stretches but can be patchy, Northern counties above Leitrim are also mostly game fishing although the Erne system is a fair mixture of both with plenty of coarse fishing too.... anyway enjoy the craic and tight lines 👍

Hi, many thanks for that, it's a great reply

Not been since the early 90s. Been there 5 or 6 times during the troubles, twice with the Scottish team fishing matches and the rest on fishing holidays. Fabulous fishing and wonderful hospitality wherever we went. Always had great accommodation which was set up for anglers with bait fridges in garages and all the necessary information available regarding best places and methods. Never been in the van but it's on our list of places to visit (y)

We went to stay with some friends in Shercock, Co Cavan last summer and we went fishing. Caught a few perch on ledger and maggots. We were told Co Cavan has a lake for every day of the year. We also done some kayaking and fresh water swimming a few trout kicking about. What was more apparent were people spinning for pike. Lots of the lakes had areas developed to encourage this. We did see a dead pike whilst swimming that was massive. Like mentioned before a Google search could help you with legalities and the best lakes to fish.
It was a fantastic few days in a lovely country who made us feel very welcome.

Ten of us used to go over in the late 80s when I was in my late teens and early 20s on a fab boys trip in a 1967 Commer caravanette where we would hire a 30ft motor cruiser on the Shannon for a couple of weeks including the mighty Lough Derg. Not much fishing went on to be sure (Well not for fish :D ) but when we did I've never seen fish like it. Massive Trout on Lough Derg and the Pike were monsters. We used to go this time of year for "Duffers Fortnight" (Mayfly). Not course fishing I know but as said, big pike and monster Perch as well. Some of the Perch were so big you could eat them (bony small ones no good). We even ate a pike. Some landlord in the pub said if we caught one between 7 and 10 pounds he would cook it for us. He marinated it in cider I believe for 24 hours. :D Tasted fantastic.

Happy days (Well a bit barmy come to think of it)

Just a small thing, don't call it southern Ireland, they prefer Irish Republic or Republic of Ireland ;)
