We saw this on Facebook this morning. I phoned our local Fiat Professional garage who checked our van, which is a series 9 with 9 speed auto gearbox, but there isn’t a software update due for it.

Has anyone else been advised about an update for their Ducato?

It only applies to the more powerful engines, up to 140bhp no problem.

Few more posts on this a while ago.

I had my Fiat 2.2, 180, auto upgraded by a Fiat Professional garage last year.

I understand just tweaking the torque curve to GB control for smoother gear changes?

More about tweaking the torque curve to stop the engines eating the gearboxes!

I called in to a Fiat professional here in Spain. Mine is a 2024, 2.2 9 speed auto, 180bhp. Mine was OK, didn't need an upgrade.

Mine is the same but a 2023. It did need the upgrade and the technician told me that if a particular error code had been found it would mean the gearbox was already damaged and would have to be replaced! Fortunately mine was OK.

So tweaking a torque curve.... to me that sounds like they are reducing the available torque which means you aren't getting what you paid for especially as it's not on the lesser power models.

Quite a few of us had it done Nov/Dec 24. One person had a letter so a number with new 180 Autos phoned their Fiat Profs and got it done.

You probably will still get the maximum torque but only in situations where it is not going to damage the gearbox, so probably depends on road speed, engine rpm, what gear the box is in, etc, etc. I haven't noticed any difference in performance since having mine done.

I agree. We know the box can handle higher power and torque because it worked fine on the earlier 2.3 litre engines. It is probably just a matter of realigning the gear change parameters.

Not sure if this is a new topic or not.
I bought a new Fiat Ducati 180bhp 21 build motorhome with the ZF 9 speed. Handed over from dealer after Facebook notification without the ZF software upgrade. We didn’t know anything about it and weren’t told about it by dealer. Gearbox seized after 3 months and 8k kms in Spain. Fiat replacing it under warranty but it could take 1 to 3 months to source and install. This is a major inconvenience with accommodation costs beyond what Fiat Assist offers. Do anyone think the dealer has any responsibility or liability here?

iirc I think that I've read that there was a problem with boxes being under filled with transmission fluid by the factory from new ?
Others will be able to confirm.

This is a newer problem caused by a software glitch. I think the dealer should have known but probably won’t admit it. Can you threaten to return the vehicle under your consumer rights gordoledfoot it was sold in a defective condition.

When I found out about the software update, from others on here. I asked my dealer and they knew nothing of it.

I phoned a Fiat Pro garage, they knew and booked me in within a few days.

Apparently its to do with the torque levels in differing gears, and the update changes these to take pressure of the hardware. - thats at the outer envelope of my auto gearbox knowledge…..

I doubt they would entertain consequential losses like yours.

A replacement loan vehicle, possibly.

What country did you buy it in?

It's only the 2.2 litre 160BHP and 180BHP variants that are affected.

I wonder if the gearbox failures were happening with vehicles plated at 3500kg or just the 'heavy' ones, or possibly towing a TOAD?

I don’t think it would be shown on the Government website because it is not a safety recall but a voluntary recall by Fiat. 140 not known to have a problem and I am not expecting to receive a notification on my 2024 140. Also at 2021 you probably have the older 2.3litre engine and this recall is for the new 2.2litre engine/9 speed auto.

When I spoke to the Fiat Garage in Oxford, she checked and said mine wasn't currently under recall (160bhp), but they were doing them in batches, so it could possibly be recalled at a later date.

Not sure what to make of that.

When the news broke about the update last year, I contacted my local FIAT Professional dealer. They were aware of the update but hadn't applied it yet for anyone. As my vehicle at the time was a 2021 build 160BHP 2.2 9 speed auto they said it was relevant so they did it for me, I was in and out of the dealership in 45mins.

It's not a recall just a software update.
