I'd like to buy a hand held, plug-in diagnostic for our 2016 3 litre Ducato Hymer. Can anyone advise me which model I should buy, and also where the diagnostic socket is located, as I can't find it.

Is it a PVC? If so, it’s behind a panel to the right of the steering wheel.

Depending on what diagnostics you want, MultiECUScan is a good option although for the full version you need a PC. If you have the PC it’s cheaper than integrated solutions - even if you have to buy a second hand PC it’s still probably cheaper. There’s also a phone version that isn’t quite as powerful - it doesn’t save to file from memory. You can buy a cheap dongle from eBAY already modified to work with MECUS.

If you just want to decode the engine warning light and switch if off, any cheap BT Dongle and one of the millions of phone apps are OK.

I’ve tried unsuccessfully to find a system that works on the Peugeot boxer

I’ve got a really cheap code reader, Bluetooth Duffy, and it has a worked a few times for me, and cleared my fault codes, and reset as required. I got it from Gedan

I’m my opinion a cheap and easy system to have to hand is better than a full on system that requires a laptop that is all at home. You often see people selling the full on system having “never used it”.

Give Gendan a ring and see what they suggest

My twopence worth.
I first bought a £30 hand held thing and its never been used it doesnt read FIAT codes the generic stuff is just that generic. Next stage the standard kit fromm Gendan (then not now )a USB dongle and Multiecuscan an my windows laptop. With the addition of a VGate icar BT dongle i got Alfaobd (android) on my phone and tablet (used in van). unless i forget my phone permamently available in van. Last year i was "forced" to buy a new laptop. The 12yr old one now only has 1 working usb port and shedding keys like a key shedding thing. The old laptop had no use in van but new one is used for Photographic stuff that i cant use tablet for. So the ne w laptop is always in van so i i have 2 versions of MES. A mickey mouse one may be able to delete codes to get rid of MIL code and limp mode but last year i had an example of someone in Spain with a Problem 2 in fact limp mode and and copy of MES on her laptop she didnt know how to use. AT least she had a good internet connection. Cooking on gas, or at least a chance do so. This is where Motor home comunity steps up. This was all reported on another forum but someone spotted it was twin egr model and contacted me via the fiat forum. So we got MES working and got her to undestand not to listen to all the well meaning posts from people she knew and to listen to this strange stranger saying yes i know what im talking about (in this very special case I do). So gave her the confidence to save info delete codes and drive home. On way home data was collected that confirmed Lpegr cooler syndrome, parculiar to twinn egr ducatos a blocked cooler, but got her home. NOw she has the problem of trying to get assistance from Fiat, any personnal knowledge how to do this?
Moral of this even if you don't know how to use it help is available, but without the kit sat in the van, no help. My preference is MES (more assistance available) but a alfaobd setup is cheaper (if already have android phone or buy a cheap tablet) and is more likely to be in the van.

Just to counter that, we will be selling our MECUScan system soon (laptop and all) but it’s because we are switching to Merc cab. We did use it a lot to diagnose complex Fiat problems. We had help from the1andonly and I would listed to anything he says about Fiat ECU debugging :-)

I have an Autel system and a Topdon. Autel interface is slightly more intuitive, but you have to pay for updates and limited vehicle coverage unless you pay more. Hence why I bought the Topdon after changing my cars. Good system, loads of coverage and free updates.
Friend in the trade speaks highly of Launch systems as well.
One tip, make sure you read and understand what systems you can reset and adjust on each model as they do not all do everything.
Hope this helps

The Topdon system does not cover the Peugeot Boxer circa 2016
Topdon told me that none of their systems work work with the Peugeot Boxer

I must admit, I didn't know that as not tried to plug one in.
