Did you or have you ever used Avast?

Sheesh
I guess nothing is for free.
Didn't know that the 'big' names [Norton, Avast, AVG] were all the same company
I think I've used them all in the past :( .

Is there any that are "safe"

Have never used Avast or any other Antivirus on Macs..

Collection and sale of user data

In late 2019, Avast browser extensions were found to collect user data, including browsing behavior and history, and send it to a remote server. The discovery led to the extensions of the Avast and AVG brands being temporarily removed from the Google Chrome, Firefox and Opera extension stores, however, they returned a short time later as there was no concrete evidence that demonstrated a breach of private data of the users.[52][53][54]

I had a copy of Kaspersky anti virus for a number of years as it was supplied by my bank. I stopped using it when i moved my current account and wouldn't want to go back to it given it's Russian. However that is an emotive rather than scientific decision - are they actually any worse that the ones mentioned above?

Use AVG Free which is Avast owned - seems to work but will hopefully never know it doesn't

That's a good question. I have no idea. My Kaspersky expires later this year, I was intending to bin it for the same reason, being Russian. My latest laptop was loaded with a trial version of Total AV, which is now very naggy, it's really annoying. It could easily be part of the same group. I don't know who to go with though. Any advice?

I've got Bitdefender on my laptops, desktop and phone. A subscription will sync with 5 devices. Lots of scam text messages highlighted. Also unsafe links in various websites.

Ok , never heard of it but I'll research it. Ta!

I used to use Kaspersky until a cyber professional (with very good connections) advised me - and anyone else on our team who was using it - to 'get shot of it'; that was in 2017.

I've used Bitdefender ever since and find it excellent, I've always avoided freeware for AV, although MS Defender is no longer the laughing stock it used to be and is actually a fairly credible AV product.
