I know this has been covered before but the threads I've found are out of date as the remommended option used to be an Asda sim on PAYG. The cheapest Asda sim I can find now is £4 per month for unlimited texts and no data which kind of fits the bill but before I choose that option I was wondering if there are any "traditional" PAYG SIMs still available when you can just top up £10 and the data doesn't expire? The specific M2M sims that are designed for the purpose are unfortunately only available for business users so I can't go down that route. Seems a shame not to use the iNet, especially after I drained my leisure battery recently and was unaware. TIA

I’ve got an Asda pay as you go sim, & loaded it with £10 (I think), & it lasts until you’ve used it.
Edit - I loaded it with £5 - we don’t use it much & I still have £4.42 left! Easy to top up when required using the app.

Forgot to say - no need for regular use with Asda, as I forgot with the last sim, & it was cancelled (gifgaf I think?)

Have a look at RWG data SIM plans. Also Lebara have very good no contract plans.

I use a giffgaff payg. It is well over a year since I last did a £10 top up and half the credit is still available.

How much data will you need? RWG 100Mb/month 5yr £22.99 - Global Sim, Euro wide.

Truma iNet does not need data, all done by text messages (or bluetooth if within range). The only requirement for the sim card is good old text messages. This rules out any sim cards operating on the Three network because it has dropped 2G signals.

The new Truma iNet X system is I believe different and might need a data card.

I’ve used, tested just about every SIM card going and the best cheapest option around is as follows.

Once the sim arrives put in a phone and activate it, then download the app and choose the penny pro deal.

1p every txt message so like me I’ve added £2.50 credit and that’s 250 text messages and the cheapest way to get your inet box working on the cheap.

Needs to be topped up every 90 days.

After a bit of further digging the Tuma iNet X system doesn’t seem to include any remote access beyond bluetooth range. In other words it is a backward step from the iNet and has no card at all.

Can someone explain what extra you can do with a sim card in the system please. I'm using Bluetooth when in the van and it just saves me getting off my bum to turn it on and off! 🙄

O2 classic SIM top up once lasts until credit used up. One paying call or text to be made every six months to keep it active.
Unfortunately I get no O2 signal at home, I had to change from giffgaff for that reason but thanks anyway

You can check the battery status or turn the heating on etc when you are not in bluetooth range.

When you are out and about you can switch the heating and hot water on and off from your phone. You can also check how warm the motorhome is. If we have gone out for the day in colder weather we will check when we are on our way back and turn the heating on if it is needed.

When the motorhome is in storage I can also check on the battery voltage from home and know if I need to visit to charge it.

You can remotely check the status. Remotely turn the heating on and off. I've been on a very soggy and muddy all day mountain bike ride and I turned on the heating a bit before I got back so it was toasty and the water was hot for a shower...

But yeah, it gets used a few times per year.

If it's as you describe then that would be perfect. I will look into it, thanks!

RWG were on my radar but I couldn't see an old fashioned payg deal that doesn't expire but I have now so that's a decent option, thanks.

The low voltage alarms (text message) can be handy too as an early warning that something is up with the van. Turning the heating on before getting back to the van was nice too.

For the benefit of anyone following this thread now or in future, I can confirm this is the cheapest option. A minimum £2.50 top up every 90 days to keep it alive so roughly 83p per month. For that it's a no brainer, thanks for the tip Realist (y)

For me it might be cheaper to stay with giffgaff. Although the individual texts are a lot more expensive it has no time limit, I am using fewer than 100 each year which is costing less than £10. For anyone who uses more than this the Talk deal looks excellent.

O2 classic SIM texts cost 2p credit lasts until it runs out. Just need a paying call or text once every six months to keep it alive.

From their FAQ:

1-Month Plans

Talk Home Mobile makes sure our customers get the best value of money, offering them the best value plans and packages without tying into long-term contracts.

That’s why the standard duration of our monthly plans is confined to 30-days. Moreover, we also have PAYG (Pay-as-you-go) plans, where you buy a plan, and it lasts until you consume the total minutes and/or total data (30-days limit).

If you choose to “auto-renew” a plan, it will be automatically renewed after the current one expires. To do so, you will have to log-in to your Talk Home Mobile “Settings” using your email on the Talk Home Mobile website, opt “auto-renew”, and provide your payment details.

They just sent me this via chat:

New iNet is not yet SMS enabled so not needed at the moment.... Just Bluetooth for now! It's so much easier to use BTW.

The new iNet X is a backward step with no remote access. Yes the Bluetooth control is easier when in range but without remote control and information the new system is of no interest or use to me.

I use 1p mobile, £30 top up for a year, topped it up £10 for 4 months I went to top it again and found and I was able to use some of my outstanding credit for the next 4 months. It uses the EE network so will work in more of the remote areas in Scotland.
