We nearly lost our dog on a campsite at about the same time. It made me think what was needed was a little LED light I could attach to his collar. You can get complete LED collars but I think a sort of LED key fob would also work as ours has short hair. We could just clip it on if letting him off the lead in say a field.

You can get LED key fobs but I haven't found one which you can switch to stay on permanently. Might look at some sort of mini-torch. It would need a battery life of several hours of course.

Also keep your eye out for the running kit they have in Aldi and Lidl, they have LED arm bands for runners. They make great collars for dogs. One fits out border terrier perfectly and the collie has two using the Velcro fastening to make a longer collar.
You get 4 for £3.99.
