We use one of those little tables that stick in the grass on one metal spike. We painted 'Pitch in Use' on the table bit and stick it into the grass - works a treat.

I just leave the wife there on a folding chair, one look from her will turn them to stone and you could use that as well.
Small children run away crying so there is no problem on family sites either. I left her IN the van at the last show so as not to frighten the funsters.
