We will be in Bernkastle Kues for the 5 day wine festival, arriving 1st/2nd September. Lots of interesting stuff to do and see. It’s one of the most popular wine festivals. If anyone is interested in this, they should get working on somewhere to stay as we found out today that the Knaus site close to town is already fully booked. There is another campsite and Stellplatz but they are 3 km out of town.
The campsite usually books up around 3 months in advance (we usually book by May).

There is a temporary stellplatz right next door though... its basically the park and ride run by the town, but with plenty of MH (overnight) parking. Last year I think it was €8 per day/night.

Thanks for the reply, we received an email this morning from Camping Mosel who are also fully booked, so we will see how our luck is running with your suggestion.

We tried getting into the campsite at Ediger Eller for their wine festival at the end of September. Contacted them in May and they were already fully booked then.

There should be plenty of space - the stellplatz is actually part of the Kueser Werth park & ride that the the town runs for the event and the only time we've seen it anywhere near full is when everyone starts arriving for the evenings, so if you arrive early in the day then you should have no problems. I've marked the entrance on the map, the green field in is divided up into sections on either side of the cycle path and the motorhomes are usually parked in the lower middle bit (between the pathway and the river). Note that its probably cash only - as are most of the stalls at the wine festival. I think there are any facilities at all - we didn't see any when we cycled through it last year, but you can use the campsite service point for €7 (don't try to use it first thing in the morning when people are leaving though....there's always a huge queue).

If you do decide to stay there then I'd love to hear your experience....we're planning on going back next year and can't decide between booking the campsite or just staying on the field.

That is over and above, thank you. A couple of years ago (maybe more) we arrived in BK on the Monday, really by then the festival was pretty much done. However a fellow camper told us about another festival in the next village called Lieser, so the next weekend we cycled there on the Friday and enjoyed it. Early Saturday we moved the van there for the weekend, there is limited free parking on the river bank. Well we had such a good time, wine, drunken Umpah bands, pretty girls presenting their vineyards offering to an equally drunk Bacchus, god of wine.
All wine drinkers should attend at least one wine festival in Germany.

Thanks for the tip. We are happily parked up on the temporary Stellplatz next to the Knaus campsite in Bernkastle Kues where the wine festival is on until Monday. After two days of rain, the ground is soft but quickly drying out as the sun re appeared. There is lots of space here at €8 per night.

Got some information today that explains the quality of the display last Saturday. According to the guy in the bike shop one of the pioneers of large event firework displays lives locally, his company puts on displays all over but always does something very special for his home town.

Where are the showers and toilets
Don't remember seeing any in 2020
Have they been a recent addition
The showers and toilets are in the building just before the service point. there are two doors side by side, Male & Female.
I do not know when they were installed.

They weren't in use, but under renovation last time we were there, in September 2020.

Cheers,

Jock. :)

Cycling is really popular here, in these temperatures with the breeze it’s a great place to be. The vineyards along the Moselle are very fragmented, no one gets to own a complete hill apparently Napoleon decreed that when owners died the children that inherited them would all be entitled to an equal amount of land. So with the usual family arguments that most of us suffer from the modern owners have a very piecemeal vineyard.

Lieser wine festival held in various weinguts some with food, some with bands. In the town shloss awards were made to the vineyards whose wine was judged to be the best. If we understood correctly a girl from the winning vineyard gets to be the 2023 wine queen, the winners from previous years all get to be part of the parade.

Now back in one of our fav Stellplatz in Reil, and we only got a river front pitch.

In 30 degrees we all need to cool down. Anyways a few days of recovery, then off to Pünderich for another wine festival next weekend. IMG_4810.jpeg
