Just got this this morning from LD lines anyone else got one
are other companies doing the same

PLEASE NOTE; WE ACCEPT YOUR BOOKING AS
DETAILED IN YOUR CONFIRMATION FOR A
MOTORHOME USING AN 'A' FRAME TO TOW A
CAR, ON THE BASIS THAT SHOULD YOU BE
REFUSED ENTRY INTO MAINLAND EUROPE OR
EXPERIENCE ANY DIFFICULTY IN PROCEEDING
YOUR JOURNEY THROUGHOUT EUROPE THAT WE
CANNOT ACCEPT ANY RESPONSIBILITY.
UNFORTUNATELY, EUROPEAN ROAD TRAFFIC
LEGISLATION IS APPARENTLY VAGUE IN
RESPECT OF A MOTORHOME TOWING A CAR AND
THERE HAVE BEEN REPORTS OF UNITS
OCCASIONALLY HAVING BEEN STOPPED AND
QUESTIONNED BY ROAD TRAFFIC POLICE.
THANK YOU.

I would imagine that they are playing safe with regard to A -frames seeing as european law is that a vehicle that is towed has to be on a trailer and cannot have any wheels on the ground. Clear legislation unlike over here where i believe A-frames are very much a grey area and ignored but Brussels now rules - so can everyone expect changes to comply with european laws with regard to towing that toad?

I reckon its a commendable thing that LD Lines have done. They could just leave you too sort yoursef out without any prior warning.

There may well be a tad of bum covering going on.

As it is, I imagine that most mh'ers are already aware of the so called grey areas surrounding A Frames.

You would have thought though, that being a specialist vehicle transport ferry, they would know the law and advise passengers in accordance with it.

If they dont know, what chance do we have.

I find it a bit odd that they found it necessary to 'cover their bum' ..

after you disembark and leave the port how could they be held responsible ?

There are plenty of other things the police could stop and check .. why did they single out A frames ?

I dont think LD would bother to issue a warning if there wasnt something amiss.

It may be that somebody has been stopped by the police for an alleged A Frame related offence and the people that have been stopped have tried to cast the blame upon LD, because they took the responsibility of transporting them.

Having said all that I agree with you Jim, whats it really got to do with LD once you have disembarked.

Hi, we saw a few French Motorhomers in Spain with cars on A Frames.

We never had any problems in France with our A Frame last year, but its better if both can drive just in case. We use a trailer now,:winky: don't suppose it will be long before the trailer has to be registered and have an MOT.  Bob.

Will be interesting if one of those Countries make a Law allowing the use of A frames, we might be able to change the Grey area in this country by using them as being part of the EU i.e. its legal there so its legal here ?

A frame towing

I have towed with an A frame in France a number of times, the general opinion seems to be that your car on an A frame is classed as a trailer and as such must comply with the uk trailer law, ie lights +750kgs it must be braked etc. also there is a general agreement between the EU countries that if you are in a member country on a temporay basis your vehicle is required to conform to the country of origon laws.
I also know that there is an A frame agent who also fits them in Holland. An import point is to make sure it is a well made and supporte A frame, I bought mine from Towsure and its fine towing and make sure that you are not infringing your camper towing limits and axle loads.

Hi Cliff
Thank you for your comments, personally I am well versed in the A frame dept,:thumb: Recent posts have talked about the problems A frame users have had, mostly in Spain.
My post was to mearly point out, that at least one ferry company feels the need to issue a warning about them, why im not sure, what do they know that we dont:whatthe:
