These are two newspaper articles that came up on my Facebook pages this weekend, but there does seem to be a purge on motorhome free camping at the moment.
The number of vans around is very noticeable this year. There are a lot of French vans in Spain at present, probably because of the trouble in North Africa. We were in Aguilas last week and there were vans all over the place. It has been reported that there is now an Aire in Aguilas at a marina car park with all facilities but few vans have been seen on it.
Not all drains are sewerage (Saniamiento), many, in fact most, are land drains. We saw on one occasion sewerage being tipped into a duct with telephone wires running through it. There is no excuse for dumping like this, as there are Aires and Camperstops available that will allow you to dump and get water for a small fee. There is a garage just west of Aguilas that provides everything. Fuel, LPG, with water and toilet dump free if you purchase fuel, otherwise 1 euro 50.
La Marina Campsite just above Torreivieja allows you to get water and dump for 5 euro without needing to stay. There is an Aire in Cartagena with free dumping and metered water, free daytime parking 11pm to 8am charge is 10 euro. Other stops range from 6 to 9 euro per night. one night on a stop, we find is all we need every week.
The big problem is the herd mentality. There are plenty of places to wild park (not camp) but they all want to be as close to the beach or the bars as they can get and put everything outside.
Having said all that, we have been requested to move on, twice in the last 2 years. We were parked, (not camped) but were told one night only. If they want to clear an area they will.
We parked on a car park at Torrenosta and found a note on our window, from the Policia Local, saying no Autocaravan parking on the front line. The car park was empty with only us and one other van we were travelling with on it. We went to a roadside layby opposite and there was no problem parking there. El Majon has similar restrictions with large empty car parks, with Auto Caravan restrictions, but no problem parking on the roadside laybys.
