Video to to USB adaptors are cheap and work reasonably well.

Bit of time on my hands and found some old VHS and Camcorder tapes. Along with a Camcorder Adapter to VHS.

Any suggestions on how to port onto my Mac please>?
So do you have a working VHS to play them on ?
That's my problem, it broke years ago.

The camcorder itself no longer works - thanks

Been on the look out for a Facebook freebie

I do have an old Philips DVD recorder with SCART connection

So if I could link the VHS-DVD recorder !

Or might just send them all off to some one !

I have a VHS-C adapter

So if I get a VHS recorder - player I can play them !
Don't know if you can still get them now but I bought a VHS/DVD writer a good few years ago. My intention was to copy all my VHS Films and camcorder taper to DVD and from there rip them to my computer. Of course I never got round to it but maybe one day...

i did exactly that. Picked up a combo dvd/vhs player/recorder off Gumtree about 6 years ago and converted a number (lots) of videocam tapes that my dad had taken from the 1980’s onwards. Took hours & hours, spread out over a number of weeks but eventually got them all onto dvds, then onto usb sticks to give to share out amongst family. Luckily I completed the project about a year before my dad passed away, so he was able to rewatch all his videos with ease. As a teen, I used to complain and hide away when he got his camrecorder out but now, so glad he did. So many memories captured including my parents revisiting The Winter Gardens Pavillion in Weston Super-mare where they first met.

I think I've still got a Blu-ray player in a box somewhere. I don't think there's a pure DVD player in the house. Converting to DVD seems like you're just creating another problem for 5 years time.

USB will be around for a long time. Although dropping a type A to type C adapter in the envelope might help future you. Save video in a few different formats to be sure. Mpeg2, mpeg4/h264, maybe Mov. And make a couple of copies. USB sticks are peanuts cheap.

I was lucky and got all mine converted before I left work on a fancy machine that simply converted the VHS tape to dvd as it played. Now have them on the hard drive too. Priceless memories, it’s so easy now with phones etc.

Have a look out for a hard drive based dvd recorder.

My brother had one from year's ago that he wasn't using, we've got it set up now, connected via scart to a video recorder, we can then set away a video to play, and the hard drive will record it as long as there's an input, once it stops seeing an input, it stops recording.
We can then edit it to make a menu system, burn to dvd, or as data, can't remember if it's vob or mpeg to play on a computer - really easy once it's set up.
Done all the kids video's from growing up and give them a full set each, done a load of conversions for the in-laws and even a couple of my own VHS stuff that isn't available on dvd

There's a place in Houldsworth mill, and one on Battersea rd. Easier to go there than try to get the kit yourself.I converted most of mine but still got a couple i need to take to someone ,I still have 2 panasonic edit decks and a dvd recorder that want a bit of cleaning/service , been sat near 20 years as i gave up doing videos and editing when all went digital. Don't forget Vhs will deteriorate over time as i have seen with mine and i used super vhs .

I think in order to do the transfer yourself the critical bit of kit is a working VHS, if you have one it's easy, but not many remain in working order.

You clearly need a way of playing the tapes preferably one with some form of digital output that connects to the computer. However, the eBay USB things I have never got to work successfully. Complete waste of money.
Then you need a suitable capture device. That's now a lot more difficult than it used to be.

Both my camcorders have digital pass through so I attach the VHS player to the camcorder then use FireWire to the tower computer. As yet, no-one seems to have developed a analogue video to USB-C device. Finally you need some capture software running on the computer.

Unless you have loads to do,, and lots of patience it is probably cheaper and certainly less stressful to send it to a conversion specialist.

Ours is a a Sony I believe, and you certainly need the remote as everything is controlled via it.

Also, its got a hdmi output, so you don't need a SCART TV, it's VHS via SCART to hard drive recorder, then hdmi to TV

I used them a about 3 years ago, the video I sent was from the early 80's. Brought back some memories for my dad and aunt. I was happy with the results and if you are not happy just as for your tapes back and do them yourself. Its cheap enough to give it a go.

It was just a way of converting analogue to digital, once on a dvd it could then be put in a laptop/desktop and copied to whatever format you want, USB, solid state drive, portable devices, cloud etc.
