Today marks the 374th anniversary of the Battle of Edgehill, the first major battle of the English Civil War. A few hundred members of the Sealed Knot Society will be gathered on the site today for a service of Remembrance. It's quite hard to imagine the thought process which would make you take up arms against the established order. Remember the penalty for failure was not a period in Belmarsh but being hung, drawn and quartered. There was no chance of saying"whoops we might have been over hasty. Let's say sorry and stop" As Cromwell said to the wavering Parliamentary grandees before the Battle of Newbury, the King only has to defeat us once and we are undone and all our posterity too.
