I bought a Maestro at auction. Worst car I ever owned. Couldn't sell it. Had to PX in the end.
You paid money for a Maestro?
I was gifted one by my dad when his eyesight wasn’t up to it, sold a perfectly good escort. Best trip I had in it was to the scrap merchants, no way I could have got money for it.

I had an MG version, the 1.6 earlier version which I absolutely loved but in the end was worthless. I was most surprised when I was offered £200 in a part exchange deal!

Surprised it’s got to that milage, British Leyland/Austin rover hateful unreliable badly assembled junk. Maestro and montego were awful, only good thing about them were the Perkins prima diesels, although they were noisy they were a good engine, the petrols were outdated underpowered and thirsty

Controversial opinion warning,,BL ceased to be PARTLY due to a workforce that went on strike to take more and more leaving nothing for investment in a future.
My grandfather went down the pit at 14 retired at65 said " unions started as the best
thing that ever happened to the mines ,but ended up being the worst thing"

Dreadful cars, the Rovers that followed them weren't much better. I remember test driving a Rover 400, only did it to get the free bottle of champagne they were offering. On the drive the trim under the dash fell down trapping my feet on the pedals that was interesting. Give them their due a good bottle of champagne arrived a week later, it was certainly better than the car.

Bl/ar were outdated, more often rehashed older designs, lack of investment, shoddy workmanship and lack of empathy for the final product.same as the Hgv and agricultural sectors, they got left behind until it was too late

Rather like the UK !!!!?
Alas, yes, like most once great industries in the uk,gone ,never to return,uk was renown for engineering and manufacturing, people blame cheaper imports, maybe part of the problem but if it’s cheaper and often better why are you going to buy an overpriced homeland equivalent.the Hgv and agricultural sectors are case in point, English manufacturers rested on old designs repeat customers putting up with poor quality, then foreign brands started to appear, the naysayers who were blinkered into putting up with what the uk had to offer were soon to change once better more efficient equipment was available, often the cost was lower overall due to better designed vehicles and equipment.I grew up with hgvs and agriculture

Newbie, former van camper and still wild camper
My first work van was one of these a D reg 2.0l diesel. It got 35mpg on diesel and 50mpg oil usage..it was a dog I had to carry a toolbox around to fix everything that broke! I regularly had to reseat the injectors grrr. I was glad to sell it and got a ford escort van that was very reliable but rusted before my eyes. Many years later I had a Freelander and I'm sure parts of the cabin interior were from my old maestro van:(

Crazy to see how decent foreign investment and management visit can turn UK manufacturers into world leading companies,.JLR , BMW mini, Nissan and Toyota all great companies. Its the lions led by donkeys that's the problem.

No cars in the 70's and 80's were fantastic. Unions gave us the best pensions and working conditions we have ever had and since they have gone so have the pensions, the miners pension is still been bled dry by the UK government while miners pensions are degraded, its a huge scandal.
