They are basically a small fan oven with a grill option and some with a steamer option.
Ours came with the very basic instructions but if you can cook a meal using your home cooker you shouldn't have a problem cooking a meal with an Air Fryer.
We use ours almost every night, cooking anything from a whole chicken through to Potato Dauphinoise.

Bread comes out quite nicely as do chips ….. what luxury a a low fat chippy sarnie only down side it’s a bit high on the carb side

Even with the predicted electricity price increases, it's going to take about 100 hours of cooking to cover the cost of buying even one of the cheapest ones.

That is not a lot, but you miss the main advantages in that they are quite a bit quicker and convenient as well as being very versatile.

We take ours away in the van as well (fits nicely in a locker) and use it a lot for all sorts of stuff

I often have Ginster pepper slices for my dinner.
It just fit's directly under the element and on on number 2 it doesn't rotate.
Turn it over once and it's cooked a treat in 5 minutes.

We didn't buy one to save money, we bought it because it cooks quicker.
You don't have that 15 mins waiting for the oven to heat up, the convenience factor more than makes it worth the purchase.

Our electric fan oven is about 8 years old and wasn't expensive. It takes about 5 mins to get up to temp. If I'm doing a ready meal, I just bung it in straight away and add 2 mins.

My daughter bought one of those Ninja thingies and it stands on the worktop having been used a handful of times with six in our household it just isn’t big enough so yet another gizmo purchased to support the PRC.

Agreed, they’re ideal for two but a family would be better off using a normal oven.

I'm a great fan of air fryers, have been for years, use mine pretty much daily.
I'm not too bothered about electricity costs, but obviously I'm aware that it's cheaper being smaller, quicker & less powerful than a domestic oven.

However if cost, rather than speed & performance is important then you should consider longevity.
Air fryers are just not as robust as your average cooker.
A cooker will last a decade or more. My experience* is that you'll be doing well to get a couple of years from an air fryer.


*I've only ever bought budget or mid range, not high end. But that applies to cookers as well.

Yes, a big family then the use becomes more limited depending on the size of Ninja but the smallest one is perfect for us both at home and away in the van

Makes a difference.

If nothing else, an air fryer can replace deep fat frying - safer and easier clean up

We have had the smaller version of that one for about 3 years and it gets a lot of use

Batch baking Taralini in the oven around 300 of the little snacks you cant do that in a air fryer

We don't use ours in the van but find it very good for sausages and fish. So easy to clean too!
