Do most motorhomes on the road (fiats etc) all do this, Glad I bought another base make now but no doubt that will have similar generic faults built into it.

Mine failed at about 2,750 miles after the filter was renewed by the garage.

Do we know if the problem is because of over tightening or under tightening the top of the filter unit?

I hadn't realised that my torque wrench did not go down to 30Nm so put it at its lowest setting and did it up as tight as I could. The base of the tool was starting to deform and in danger of cracking so I thought it was tight enough!

Now ordered a torque wrench that will do it right next time!

I have to say that with Techno's illustrated guide the job is dead easy on a right hand drive van!

I believe under tightening is likely the main cause. The tool is designed to deform to prevent over tightening.
The other cause is tightening in a vice which offers no protection to the housing body.
