£4200 Basic + extras down here in Surrey, had to pay that last year for my Brother.
As the Funeral Director Said at the time "Get yourself a Funeral Plan"......."Pay Now.....Die Later"
Stay well, live long.
Best wishes.

Don't understand those costs. Average cost of cremation in the UK is well under £1K. Our instructions to kids: do the legal bits, corpses to the crem, money left for big party. (y)

My Dad always said he would just leave enough to cover the funeral and a party when he went! Got his timing a little wrong though and actually left us kids a small lump sum - we bought our old first motorhome and started a whole new adventure! Dad would of approved tho :giggle:

Its not that simple unfortunately....

A direct cremation is one of the most affordable funeral options in the UK, with the average cost of a direct cremation up to £2,230 less than the average cost of a cremation*.

A direct cremation costs on average £1,626** in the UK and does not usually include a funeral service, a procession or the provision of a hearse or limousines.

Unattended Funeral costs £995 and also includes:

- collection of your loved one a few days prior to the cremation from anywhere within mainland Great Britain^
- preparation at our quality mortuary facilities...

If the paperwork is taken into the account it works out a shade over £3500.....Been there only recently and costs are as above.
You can get it under a grand but your family would have to be really care free and without any compassion at all for their loved one they have just lost.

Bit doom and gloomish this but its a fact....Births and deaths are the real money makers in life

Just under £5k for my Dads funeral time you factor in the coffin and wake.

Don’t know what made me cry the most, seeing him go through the curtains at the end or seeing the £1200 coffin I bought going through the curtains at the end :(

When our Mam died, the undertaker turned up with a "coffin catalogue" and opened it up somewhere around the middle pages. My brother said something like "Oh, that one looks like it's from the Burlington range, rosewood veneer on mdf ? " The undertaker looked at him, then turned the pages to the cheaper boxes at the start of the catalogue ! ;)

Surely Greta should be all over this ? Why waste the cost of burning a perfectly serviceable item, thereby causing CO2, when it could be re-cycled time after time.

my daughter works for a big waste company i have asked her to just come round and chuck me in the back of a dust cart i had thought of having my ashes spread around the north circular road as i spent 22 years driving round it

When my Dad was dying he moved in with us because I wanted to make sure he had the best terminal care possible and he did. He was diagnosed a few days after we had exchanged contracts on a house “in need of modernisation” . Undaunted we all moved in with a 3 year old and a 5 year old and had a glorious summer living on bar b ques and camping style cooking as we had no kitchen. Dad was only 61 and would have had a tiny works pension, just before he died he said, “ don’t spend your half on a holiday, get this bloody house sorted”, he knew us well. So we spent our inheritance on the double glazing, he would have loved it.

He wanted to be cremated but Mum had been buried so he didn’t want to waste the double plot so said to stick him in there to save money. That was the only time he went back to her grave and they fell in love at 11, he was firmly of the belief that the only place people lived on was in the hearts of those left behind and anything else was for show.

Do what’s right for you and yours.

My wife's cremation was in Brisbane while I was in Oman. Her remains were posted back to me in a plastic, sealed, box. It was evil but fun to see the post boys face when he said 'Mr Neil, I have a parcel for you.' and I said ' Ah good, that will be my wife.'

Once you are gone, you are gone. There is a reason the rest is referred to as your remains.

ps...cost about £1000.

My mum's was way cheaper than that in fact we did it for less than a plan would have cost. But we had no limousine a cheap wake etc. I think it's like weddings there are some things you have to have that are fairly cheap the rest depends on what you want. I am a poor attender at funerals as I only go if theres someone left behind who I know well for the person in the box is past the point of it making any difference to them and I hope they knew that I cared last time I saw them.

Yes I fully understand your point, we are similar in that, but I didn't have much of a say in the organisation, but That's another story:mad: There were two wakes, a simple one that I organised and paid for, and another that the non family organized, but also claimed from Bros estate:swear:

The people who wil not buy a used MH because somebody has slept on the mattress might recoil about being sent to the Crem in a used coffin.

They won't be placing the order usually!!!! I think the after death things really hard for some people to look at logically it's like people wanting a cremation but being anti organ donation.

More than a bit different !! As a living person, I would find it offputting to sleep on a stained etc. mattress, but if I were dead you can lay me out on any old mattress cos I won't care a jot !! I'll be too busy catching up with my mates in the afterlife !

It can be that simple. Remember this is what my wife and I have chosen: simplest disposal of corpses possible (although a bodybag in the back of daughters estate car might be a step too far - for her); ashes returned to our offspring in the cheapest container (a paper bag if that was an option); ashes scattered at a place of our (or offsprings') choosing. No mourning, no procession, no posh coffins, & definitely no religious involvement. Big happy party. Anything more will be at the behest of the living. This is where I very quickly looked at the cost:

Can get a cremation here with no service or cars for just over a grand..That's plenty to spend at a funeral directors and spend the rest on a good wake.?? BUSBY.

This is a true story.

On the way up to Santander to catch the ferry one summers day, I think we got to 40c in Haro.

My wife, wanting to make conversation, actually said to me.....

“Do you know, if I died on the way to the ferry one day. Would you be snow to just lie me on the bed at the back and take me home?”

We still laugh about it every time we go to Haro

She would have to be in a belted seat. I dont think the law makes any exception for being dead.

This is my dilemma at the moment. I want a direct cremation, no service and definitely no lying in a funeral home and people seeing me. This is written alongside my will but not sure how to pay in advance.

I think it's like organ donation you need to tell the people who are likely to be left behind in advance it could be difficult for them to accept your wishes when the time comes if it's a surprise to them

Truth is as soon as insurance companies get involved in any industry prices rise dramatically instead of everyone involved making a profit everyone wants to make a killing (please excuse the pun), the insurance companies also want to make a killing with their plans they are not doing it for us. You only have to look at the veterinary profession and the costs of pet care for evidence.

I wasn’t sure whether to put a funny face to that !

To be fair, my family can do what they want. I won’t know about it. Do fancy a wicker coffin though.
