In the Motorhome. Pulled into a motorway service area a couple of weeks ago; early on a weekday morning. Had breakfast, walked the dog, got a paper. Hung around for a little while reading it. The area had really fast broadband and Katie needed it for a school project so we were in no hurry. Left the car park, went to the filling station, filled up, washed windscreen, checked oil, purchased oil, added oil, added windscreen washer etc....

Anyway, yesterday I got an official looking 'fine' of £100 for overstaying by 40 minutes. Complete with 'proof' via a photo showing us enter and leave the premises with a 2:40hr gap. Though I was probably only actually 'parked' for 10/15 minutes over the 2hour limit. For that, they want £100 or £50 if I pay them quickly:xrofl: Well they can :whistle2: for their money as I won't be paying, just like I've never paid all the others.

I believe these parking companies to be no better than crooks, modern day highway robbery with menaces and if this guy with a couple of law degrees gets lucky, they may get their just deserts http://www.challengethefine.com/blog4.html.

Have a great Christmas and New Year and our best wishes to all the family!

Are you allowed to run a thriving business. Or be a CEO..

With a Criminal Record.. ? :xrofl:

I wrote letter number 7 yesterday to parking eye rejecting their invoice for "parking" for excess of two hours at Warwick Services whilst waiting for a breakdown company to replace a tyre. Its just a game now, to see who will give up first (it wont be me!)

If that guy does win I can see exit barriers being installed at car parks and everyone will have to pay to leave if they exceed any free period.

My old company had one for a large crane broke down with a engine blown it took us over 2 weeks to get it sorted idiots wanted us to tow it off area even got police involved
It weighed 170 ton and took 2 wreckers to tow it 2 miles off motorway into services with 3 cop cars as escort
I heard they wanted £200 a day parking I "know" they got nowt

They are free to do that but the cost of installing and maintaining the barriers would far outweigh the revenue they would earn.
As mentioned on another thread they can only charge for their actual loss which they would have a hard job proving anything for a motorway service area unless it was actually full and by overstaying you prevented new arrivals coming and spending money.

Probably easier to prove in car parks other than MSAs and, as mentioned in the other thread, they can include admin charges.

Probably get a ban for this , but jim why the hell would you want to stay on a motorway services more than two hours, and if you have been had as many times as you say , you would think you knew better by now.

They can try and add administration charges but even then it must be judged reasonable and as the DVLA only charge the parking companies £2.50 for the vehicle owner's details I would take that as a benchmark the parking companies themselves should charge.

This company charge a flat fee of £16 to fight parking charges and claim they have never lost a case: http://www.parkingticketappeals.org.uk/

I would have more sympathy for private car park owners if their "fines" were reasonable, but they are not.

I'm sure they would argue that their charges are reasonable, and probably use the similarity to LA fine amounts to do so. Reasonableness, like common sense, is in the eye of the beholder :) As mentioned on the other thread, a definitive court ruling is probably required to clarify the matter. I would not be surprised, though, if the court ruled in favour of the car park owners and their contractors.

The whole parking ethic, particularly in MSA's seems draconian to me. I can't imagine the French remaining silent if on their Autoroutes they received a warning not to 'Drive when Tired' and were then restricted to how much time they could rest without incurring a fairly substantial charge. It's not even practised on the Tolled routes or any where else in Europe to my knowledge. The whole area needs to be addressed and soon.

Happened to me when I first got van Jim, I wrote and said I had fallen asleep .. happened to be the truth ... and it would have been dangerous for me drive as I was exhausted .. see the motorway signs saying Tiredness Kills. It might be worth a try if it comes to it.

We could always allow Europe to take over our complete legal system Bertie :D

Spray-on motorcycle chain lube is better is make the lens go fuzzy.
I got a load or trouble from one of these companies after staying overnight a Lockerbie Services, Hotel site. I had booked in, and correctly identified my car on a screen showing it four times at the reception desk. Next week got demand for £100 for 14 hour stay, told them the details a go shove it. They came back and because I had four pictures therefore I was there even though the identity was one picture. Told them to shove it again and gave the Hotel Hell of a complaint which stopped the demand saying' I WAS EXCUSED FOR THIS OCCASION.'
Guess I will not be using there Hotel again.. PS I did say CAR. I have my own hotel now.
