Do you buy presents or agree to send each other cheques for an amount agreed between you ? Or do you buy something wrap it and label it to your self to open xmas morning and just tell other person how much they owe you ? Or do you not bother full stop ? Or even buy presents for other people ?

For the first time this year we have agreed as a family not to buy each other presents or send cheques and vouchers, with the exception of our grandchildren. Sue and I have agreed to cap the limit we spend on a present to open on Christmas morning. Instead we are indulging in a Christmas treat of going to a concert together.

We tend to buy gifts for nephews and nieces as we have no children. When they reach 18 that stops.

We then buy for family that visit and stay with us over Christmas, so this year my sister, her husband, my 25 yr old niece and my mum. We tend to buy board games like trivial pursuit, harrys hungry hippos so we can all do something together.

Tina usually gets a little spoiled with presents but as we have both taken 2 months of work in Jan to go to Spain and Portugal only a few small pressies this year.

Hi , We don't do pressies anymore only for the Grandchildren, seems pointless buying things for family & friends ( grown ups) who have every thing they need & want ( only winner is the shopkeepers). It's agreed with them not to buy us anything likewise, again any thing we want we would go and buy myself during the year. sorry to be a bit humbug!

I didn't buy the grandkids last year as they are all but one over 18 but felt guilty.
I did buy for rosie my grandaughter aged 9 and her mum and dad.
I bought for everyone this year.
Sent them by courier to my daughter who wraps them and gives them on our behalf as we are in Portugal.
I only see them only once a year and it pains me that I don't even get a thank you.
They are old enough to know it's not santa giving them.
It's too comercialised for me.
Is quite nice being in Portugal, no hype of Christmas here! !!
No queues at the supermarkets, brilliant.

Not bother, full stop. used to years ago but in reality when most people can buy what they want when they want , what is the point ? I find it all depressing & can understand why the suicide rate goes up.

Hubby and I don't bother buying for each other but we buy for our daughters and boyfriends and my brother. If I visit my nephews this time of year I usually take them edibles and pressie or money for their kids depending on age.:xThumb:

I still live up to my name ....... Santa Claus ....... and love to see the faces of my family when they open their presents. The sad part for me is not being able to give my dear Mum and Dad a gift. They are no longer with me. I do have many happy past Christmas memories of them though. :xThumb:

What a lot of common sense in this thread.

Presents for grandkids here and a goody bag for suffering parents.

We buy for immediate family. And one or two special friends. We also donate to charity and foster an animal or two. Steve is having a new kindle ( old one has just packed up) and I hope I'm getting a guitar. Our birthdays are very close to Christmas so prezzies tend to be joint christmas/birthday ones.

Immediate family and two friends. Agreed price limits apply. Shopkeepers beware.

Still enjoy the Christmas spirit(both kinds) though.:xgrin:

I encourage my kids to avoid buying expensive presents for everybody; save all the money, and splurge it all on a big present for me.

Also enjoy buying stuff in the pound shop, passes a pleasant 20 minutes and invariably the stuff you buy comes in handy which can't be said for other stuff.

Its not about how much you spend but the thought you put into it...giving money pretty vulgar isn't it?

No more
Between Jane and myself we have 29 nieces & nephews who each get a tenner, my three brats get a main present and a few bits, but the rest of the family get cards. Oh and we always play with the presents before wrapping them, it's the law in this house:xrofl:

Getting better
We changed it around a few years back. In the Family my SIL produces a list each family member is allocated another to buy a single pressie for budget £50. That way we all have only one present to buy and all have one to open on Christmas Day. The exception are the grandchildren who are all under 8, so different rules apply. Seems to work well and reduces the stress and cost of Christmas.

35 years ago, wife and I agreed that Christmas is for kids and family. We let everyone know that the only presents would be for the family members who were under 18. This eventually included our own daughter, who is now 23 and so no Christmas present, but who gets more "stuff" the rest of the year than most of us on here probably got in all our Christmases past put together. I must also say that the wife and I also get lots of "stuff" during the year, I personally buy myself lots of lovely MH related crap, she's taken up painting and is forever buying brushes, paper, etc. etc.

PS, I am an atheist, but even I get annoyed when Christ is continually replaced by "X". It's like we don't even pretend anymore.
And Bah Humbugs of the season to all.

Good man.
At their young age it should be easy! things to draw with and picture books. A su corta edad, debe ser fácil! cosas qué sacarla, y libros ilustrados

sorry on reflection that not fair for those with BIG families :)

but I do like the idea given earlier of each person selecting one prezzie for one person within large families. that way instead of a lot of little inconsequential things you get a significant one.....just maybe something you actually want!lol
