Have a 2012 x250 ducato fitted with an aftermarket eberspacher cab a/c system - std-9280 fwiw.

To cut to the chase although fully gassed and leak checked the air con only works reliably when not too hot - over 25C or so it becomes unreliable or stops working - basically stops working when too hot.

Mailed eberspacher on the back of which took the vehicle to the local agents yesterday. Checked the system over, regassed, worked fine when stationary but as soon as I drove it home system cut out. Waiting a call back from the service chap which suspect may drift into Monday.

Anyhow have a suspicion it maybe related to the engine cooling fans. A quick 5 minute look on the drive showed the a/c was cold when the smaller engine cooling fan ran but the a/c was not cold when it did not run. Not sure if the fans are directly or indirectly inhibiting the a/c system.

If anyone has had similar experience or advice would be keen to know.

Not familiar with it but, without the fans running the compressor head pressure will go up too high and if it's fitted with a HP switch it will trip the compressor off.

If it hasn't got an HP switch the cooling would still be much reduced with a high head pressure. But if the van's moving there'll be plenty of forced air and the fans shouldn't need to run.

Maybe the next step is to put some gauges on it and go for a drive.

Have you checked the fans are running in the right direction ?

So, update of sorts on this.
The eberspacher a/c kits look to have been originally made by diavia. Diavia were formerly part of delphi and are now owned by webasto. Did think it might be worth taking the vehicle to my local webasto dealer, turns out this is the same garage who failed to fix the system last week.

Managed to find installation instructions for what I believe to be a similar kit made by diavia.

Using the schematic below it is (relatively) clear the a/c system should be able to control both engine fans using two relays. Once again when testing on the drive the system would work intermittently, tested thermostat, pressure switch connector and fan relays. At this point although shorting the relays would run the fans it was not possible to energize the relays shorting the expected pins on the pressure switch connector - no 12v present. Chased the cable round the engine bay and into the fusebox to find a fuse holder (not shown in schematic) containing a blown fuse. Replaced the fuse, system now able to control the fans. When at idle on the drive last night and during a brief drive the system seemed to work reliably (previously over 25C the system wouldn't work), the a/c at all times running one of the two fans.

Hopefully this turns out to be the root cause and hopefully someone find this useful at some point. Bit dissapointed paid the local agent best part of £150 for what turned out to be an expensive regas (apparently all wiring was checked) but there we go.

Thanks for sharing , a good bit of detective work. Always nice to hear the outcome of problem threads.

Obviously not checked very well I'd be looking for a refund.
