Since May 05 (Ex Tuggers).
Years ago, I used to listen in to all sorts using a Realsitic Scanner, which will be much outdated now I would think.

Just for listening? That's a lot of radio!

What about this?

Actually....You dont even need to buy any Radio Hardware to listen....There are Remote Radio Sites on the net where you can log on and do a virtual Bandscan.....I can ask my friends for links....Dont know how they find the sites but they are geeks. I know theres one great site in Holland I think coming from a University that they use.

Is there a receiver that can be used to listen in to ham radio?
If you are into computers then the SDRPlay range is the best option. Basically a Software Radio that you drive from your PC.

The next choice down the list is buying a Chinese one, like the Tecsun.

You can have much more fun with an SDR, like listen to signals from the Space Station and Satellites ....

Cheers

Wow. Very colourful..........but what does it all mean?
Wish I had kept up my childhood interest in radio but right now I’m a complete plank👎👎😁
Try 14.125 to 14.350 MHz and tune to SSB. You should hear people most days on those frequencies.
The RSGB has band plans. That should help you find us ....

If you want to take an online licence then there are classes. The RSGB run the exams, Essexhams run free courses. Next one is 7th February! Hear you on the air
Cheers

Derek, did you ever hear again from your transworld ballon?
No, I suspect it went pop sometime during the third night. :( But it was through the ballooning I got interested in ham radio and I may try another balloon later this year. :)

I was amazed at work when having an IT session with our resilient comms kit. We use a portable sat dish if the telephone and mobile network is lost.

The output of the transmitter to the satellite was just 4 watts!

When I queried if this was enough, the IT chap said the satellite just had very big ears so it was plenty.

The antenna is everything! :)

It's a bit like balloons, which at high altitude can with just 10mW of power be heard hundreds of miles away. Direct line of sight works very well. :)

I found an easy way to learn C W was whilst driving reading number plates, company names and phone numbers. Anyone looking for a short wave receiver there are some reasonably priced ones on eBay but don’t forget a good antenna is probably the most important item needed. If you have the space a full size G5 RV (56 ft long in 2 directions ) is cheap and effective

I remember many years ago driving to Martyn Lynch in London and buying a brand new FT1000MP in those days it was a nice bit of kit.

Good old days.

There's a thing called SOTA - Summits On The Air - where people walk to the top of mountains and contact other Hams. Handheld 2m sets like that work very well and because of the location, on top of a mountain, the range is impressive. I've only tried it once as Covid shut everything down but I had a contact nearly 50km away.

But as an update to this thread on the WSPR front I've had better success recently having worked out the best way to string the antenna across the garden. I picked up a "spot" from Australia last week and was heard there too. On Sunday I tried again and towards the end of the day when 20m wasn't working across Europe (it was dark :)) I was being heard across North America and even in the Antarctic where a WSPR station seems to have appeared recently. From the callsign is is at the German ice station. https://www.awi.de/en/expedition/stations/neumayer-station-iii.html
