Wood burners in caravans (1 Viewer)

Does anyone have experience with putting a wood burner in a caravan please?

No experience of fitting Joy, but I did research it when I considered fitting in my RV.. that's as far as I got..

this was the stove I looked at.. Windy Smithy

I dropped the idea for several reasons..

* cost of buying and fitting
* dirty to use
* not allowed on some campsites
* logs need to be sourced and stored.. not easy in a motorhome
* Gas is cheaper, cleaner and safer

I watched amazing spaces yesterday, they were building a hanging wooden framed hut thingie, with a log burner!!

I has got to be risky

that said, when we first got married we stayed in a friends elderly residential caravan, only about 25' but that had a solid fuel stove

definitely cosy

but full agreement with all reasons why Jim says no, particularly 2 + 5

can you imagine arriving at the ferry port, as you check in,

sir, is you log burner completely extinguished.. .. or in a filling station. hang on whilst I dowse the embers.. or traveling in winter.. hurtling down the Autoroute ... honey, I'm freezing.. do me a favour, go and put another log on ..

it's a nice romantic idea.. but impractical and definitely not the safest heating option .. I'm out

Not practical for many reasons. I have fitted several in houses and know they consume vast amounts of oxygen as well as wood. You would defeat the object in a small space, as you would have to leave the door or a window open for a woodburner to work. Many think they can just have a wander around on a Sunday afternoon and collect wood for free heat. In reality woodburners nead dry hardwood that has been cut at least for 2 years. Its also a full time job for the maid dusting.

Essentials in a caravan, smoke detector, CO detector, fire extinguisher and ventilation

..... and the smoke detector will probably go off every time you light the wood burner

.................No problem if you have dry wood and do not stray too far when it's lit

Oh and stand it on something non-combustible - not the floor !!

............and take care with flue going through roof/wall..................

Friend of mine is an old hippy with an even older van, he has a woodburner fitted and wilds up in Scotland a lot. He cuts up wood and stacks it for the next time he's up there.

lots do have them in truck conversions even the ones that have wooden boxes as the living quarters . many use these as a way through the roof http://www.windysmithy.co.uk/flue-flashings.
i was going to fit one but then got given a thermex gas heater . later fitted a bigger new one . much easier than chopping wood .
as it is i find two gas wall lights give enough heat most of the time .
