Have agreed a deal on a MH private sale. The current owner has the van insured in his work policy as the owner of a large haulage company. So it’s not got a tracker or Cat 1 alarm fitted.

The conundrum is that I can’t get a spot at Vanbitz until mid May. I also can’t get insurance to drive there unless it’s got the above items fitted.....

We wanted to collect it this weekend and now I’m just not really sure what we do. Even if the owner said he would keep it until May, we don’t want to drive it without insurance.

Anyone experienced similar?

Unless it's in excess of 60 or 70 thousands there's plenty of other insurers out there who will insure without a tracker

And whilst Vanbitz is the best there are other options available for trackers and alarms

Tried

Comfort
NFU
Caravan Guard
AIB

All say the same

It’s in excess sadly

Tracker and alarm essential!

I insure with NFU - when we picked it up I advised them that a tracker and alarm would be fitted a couple of weeks later and they were okay with insuring it while I had to wait for it to befitted - have you tried asking?

comfort insurance, gave me a month to have my tracker fitted and alarm upgraded at vanbitz as long as it was booked in.
if the van were new how else would you get it to a reputable fitter workshop without insurance.

Will call NFU back in the morning then thanks

Safeguard no tracker required and no height limit on your van for recovery.

We don’t have a tracker fitted and NFU Chichester didn’t ask us to fit one.

Results you get with NFU are branch dependant.
My mate just got a quote for same value as your van from Chichester branch, alarm or tracker not required but do give a discount if you have them fitted.

Who do you have recovery with as many have height restrictions?
Relevant to OP I think.

Brought my MH in April 2017 and when I called before I brought it I was told no tracker or alarm required. However when I called to transfer insurance over on the day I was then told it needed a tracker as requirement for the insurance. When I queried it I was told I was misinformed before and as the the vehicle was over a certain value (110k) this was always needed. I had already booked into vanbitz to get the alarm sorted but then needed to add a tracker which they said the MH would be insured but not for theft and I had 30 days to have one fitted. They were not bothered about the alarm just the tracker. That’s was comfort insurance. Seems to be common thing now from the looks of it. Probably due to all the thefts that I keep reading about. I wouldn’t be without ours as it’s piece of mind as I have done all I can to stop it being stolen. If somebody has got around the tracker and the alarm as well as the ignition block then they really know what they are doing and nothing will stop them.

We went with RAC Arrival via the Caravan and Camping Club as we needed unlimited cover time-wise and they cover a 7.5 tonne vehicle.

Explain to your insurer booked in, they should give you one of two options
Covered until alarm fitted date, if date missed no cover.
Or exclude theft until alarm and tracker fitted
2nd one if not ideal but at least you can drive home ams store say in a secure compound site which reduces risk.

Cannot believe even on a haulage fleet his insurer has not insisted in an alarm and tracker. Maybe they did and hes ignored it

Could you drive on the vendor's third-party cover? Pay a deposit, say £119,900, then drive to VanBitz.

Fit the tracker, complete the purchase, change the insurance?

Comfort allowed me 10 days to get cat 5 tracker, so it constantly tracks, and cat 1 alarm fitted.
Got SAP to do it in doncaster.
The tracker had a one off lifetime payment

NFU came back at close of business. Was referred 4 times to underwriter for

1) Is it on a locked and gated driveway ... no
2) Is the driveway attached to the house ... yes
3) Does it have a tracker ... no
4) Does it have an alarm ... no

“Yeah that’s all ok sir. £422 per annum £150 excess”

Cool

I had a real telephone dig dong with Safeguard as they said I would not be insured without a tracker and a cat 2 alarm. I wanted to simply take it from my dealer to Vanbitz and would be staying in it overnight before it was fitted. I think the criteria is a vehicle worth over £110k need the above. Only after I asked for them to check with their broker would they budge and gave me a 24 hour window. They also said they would normally provide cover for 7 days were the vehicle under £110k (or it might have been £100k not sure now). I would push whatever insurance company you choose to use.

I’m insured with safeguard the van is in excess of 80k and they didn’t require a tracker or alarm, also covered for 365 days European travel and roadside assistance

We had same issue when we first got the van but Safe Guard only insisted on a tracker or alarm. They gave us 30 days grace to get alarm fitted and just wanted the certificate of installation to carry on. Recently went to France so because of something called Brexit we needed a green card, called them and it arrived next day in the post. Very knowledgeable company so would try them to see if they would allow the 30 days grace. And like someone said above there are just as good companies as vanbitz out there and maybe more local.. We had same issue could not get a slot so used a local company which were very good and good after sales service once fitted for a user error I had. Did use vanbitz for SP though once we got a slot.
