Just looking for a little bit of advice from someone with some electronics experience :-

I purchased one of these :-

I was expecting to be able to switch the load on and off, as in I thought the above device would simply pass the input to the output (it looks like that in the picture)

But it looks to me like it actually works like any other wireless relay eg. :-

And therefore in order for it to do what I want, I would need to wire it something like this (ignore the positive/negative colouring and crap image :) (just an example) :-

Is there actually a WiFi unit I can purchase that simply connects the input to the output? at a press of a button (e.g. like the first picture seems to suggest)- I am not looking to power on an AC load from a DC input or connect a load that consumes more current than the input. Surely such a device exists?

Have a look at this YouTube video. Although the video is for a mains version, it's wiring and operation will probably be the same.
Here's a picture of the PCB of your unit which looks much the same as the one in the video.

That's is exactly what I expected with the device I bought, I didn't buy the Sonoff as it was talking about AC only and I was more interested in DC.
This is the device I received, but I was almost certain the one I purchased had a L and N output (but looks like it has a com and an CK output (no idea what CK stands for):-

Having now read your post properly you could use the WiFi switch to control a simple relay to switch the AC.

Yes I already have some of these WiFi relays, I was looking to simplify. e.g. what the Sonoff does in AC with the device I bought in DC, but it seems that the unit I received works exactly the same way as the WiFi relays I already have and what you posted in your last link. I can use these but I was just looking for a simpler device. The Sonoff seems to simply pass the input to the output, what goes in comes out and the DC ones I bought apparently should do the same.
