Winter Camping V Villa Apartment Rental? (1 Viewer)

Hi,

Just looking at costings.

I know some of you are a little older than us. We now have a house in Spain and have, in the past. Travelled to villas in our Motorhome to rent a house (easier to travel in a Moho with facilities).

I was just looking at the cost of longer term villa rentals/apartment rentals v campsite costs and the hassle of WC/Water/Waste etc.

A friend of ours has just rented out a 3 bed villa, long term to an elderly couple in Costa Blanca for £3,500 for 10 weeks. The couple have a motorhome. But they have decided to use the moho for weekends and driven down to Spain in the car for the winter.

They say they have done it for ease. Plus they can offer rooms to family and friends and even a parking spot for MoHo friends stopping by.

I just hope they MoHo friends don't put blue down the loo as it has a Septic Tank!. Something our rental agent friend was not aware of being an issue.

Just back from Benidorm. A month in a one bed apartment was similar to camping and as you said they empty the cassette and change the bedding for us.

I was impressed at how thriving Benidorm was. Never seen so many up market cars and models that have not made it to the UK.

Drove down in car but Santander crossing was grim both ways. Only 1700 miles driven from Macclesfield.

Apartments can be cheaper but we like campsite life, many apartment blocks in the areas we like are relatively empty in the winter and could lead to a feeling of isolation, not that we are very gregarious but a little social interaction with neighbours is nice.

Quite a few people we know have started renting apartments but frequently visit the site.

We rent our apartment out, but in winter it's our home. We could easily rent it in winter we are always passing customers on, but we prefer to be here, it's in a great location bars and restaurants are open and it's still busy and a nice place to be.

We often visit the campsite here having spent 10years on it and having many friends there, but they are so busy it's nice when we go home.

There was a tv program coming on tv about renting for 3 months in winter in Spain to escape the bleak British winter.

It will be interesting watching this tv programme because there is a shortage of winter let's here, a lot of the properties are owned by Spanish from Madrid and only used by family, and it may bring out all the illegal that are not registered and do not pay any taxes. Bob

We have had an apartment for 10 weeks, near Estepona. Very nice, and sea views. Off road parking, nice and easy for a stroll along the prom for miles if you wanted. Comfortable, two beds, two baths, very large balcony. And the right price too.

Returning to the same spot day after day, became a little mundane. We fancied a trip to Nerja, where we holidayed many years ago. A 2 hour trundle there, a pleasant time was had, then there is the 2 hour drive home! . Plus we couldn't brew a fresh cuppa, and knock up a sarnie, as and when.

That's what we didn't like, returning to the same point each and every day. We like to dawdle along, stay where we fancy, for as long as we fancy. Sometimes on the coast, sometimes inland. That's our input, each to their own.

That sounds very nice but at €3500 for ten weeks that’s €50 per night without food etc campsite can be a lot cheaper and you can move around a bit for variety.

And that is us as well, and the reason we have never got a place in France or Spain, for what we paid for our Concoerde we could have a nice gaff in France, but it would just drive us mad. love to travel around and do what we want.

We've considered a long term winter rental in Spain, but like others, prefer the freedom to move around.

However, we have an interest in the Holiday Property Bond (HPB), which has 34 different holiday locations around Europe and the UK. They range from individual villas, to resorts with dozens of cottages and apartments - a choice of 1,400 holiday units in all.

We regularly mix-and-match with our van, using it to travel to: Spain; France; Austria; and Scotland. Could easily do Portugal and Italy too. Handily, they also have a property near Folkestone, about 5 miles from the tunnel.

After a modest up front investment, HPB provides rent free high quality self-catering accommodation, with just a no-profit user charge to cover running costs.

It is not necessarily a cheap option, but IMHO does provide good value for money and offers impressive standards. And just like when motorhoming, there is a big bondholder community (43,000), so lots of social interaction. Within our first four years of involvement we'd sampled all 34 locations, and now return frequently to our favourites.

The operation is based in the UK, was started in 1983 and has never had any borrowings.

On a different tack, we are planning to do something different next winter - garage our van in Spain and fly down periodically to make use of it. We have a ferry to Santander booked for the journey there in the autumn, but probably drive back through France in early spring.

Because we want to visit friends on Camping VillaSol in Benidorm we flew down and booked into the Hotel Regente for 50 Euros a night, Bed, Breakfast and Evening meal for the two of us.
