We are in Portugal for a couple of weeks.

Many thanks
Pam

Some of these Alentejo barrels may find their way to the supermarket 💡🤣🤣🤣
Douro valley reds are also fantastic , Portuguese wine is superb , enjoy !
We did the Douro Valley wine route in the MH pre Covid and our livers live to tell the tale 🤣🤣🤣

Funnily enough in the Uk I find Douro wines eminently quafable (from Tesco)
But when in Portugal I’ve found alentejo wines to be more to my taste!

We were in the Alentejo during the first COVID lockdown a good local red is Carmin Navigent? was an easy drinking wine sold in most supermarkets in both bottle and box but there are loads available go pot luck you shouldn't be disappointed

We did the Alentejo we're still surviving too!

We just pick the bottles with a nice label. Portuguese reds are excellent never had a bad one, don't see them much over they keep them for themselves.
Quite a few around now we've had them recently from Aldi and Sainsbury's

They're cheap enough to try a drop of several. Reseal the ones you don't like and give 'em as presents.
(At my motorbike club's Christmas raffle for charity there's the same bottle of plonk that has been donated year after year).

No idea if quaffable or paint stripper, but much cheapness! ;)
Hi.
Not seen that yet.... But.. Lidl " Conde Noble vinho Tinto . " On a par price wise 86/88 cnts a Ltr carton ? I bought some a few years back and now Main Line on it, Christmas present from the G/son. 10 ctns.sees the Christmas holiday out.... It suits my taste buds a treat... BEWARE of the C/Noble White wine it IS undrinkable..
Rule of thumb ? White wine should be chiled slightly to make it crisp and bring out the flavour. Whereas.Chill red wine and it decreases the flavour, accentuates the alchol content and makes drinking it an unpleasant experience........ WHAT ? I was told the americans chilled red wine,so thought i would give it a try.... Proper ! So in this house Conde Noble vinho Tinto 11%. Comes straight from fridge to table, poured into a glass and Quaffed.
Tea Bag.
PS. two ctns in the fridge as i type this.
PPS. One has been started....... :beerchug:

If EVER!!! you find yourself in Porto, make your way to the Railway St. (the one with the tiled atrium}
Stand with your back to the pedestrian entrance and look, over the road in front of you.
Left of centre you will see the entrance to the Metro

To its right and crossing most of the pedestrianed road is a bakery cafe with lots of tables, chairs, umbrellas.
Go over the road and plonk yourself in a chair.
Order a glass of vino tinto.

Not only is the size of glass and wine large. The quality of the wine was/is phenomenal and the price four years ago was 1€!!

But to answer your question directly, based on recommendations from seasoned (and probably pickled) Funsters with knowledge of these things, the advice to try the Alentejo reds is the right way. We’ve tried several (not all in one night) and have found the €3-4 a bottle wines equal to the £8+ stuff at home. Tonights is a special offer. Not had a bad one yet.

I was going to recommend a Borba Reserve.
I worked in the Alentajo around Borba, Vila Viçosa / Alandroal 25yrs ago prospecting for gold / copper mineral deposits.
The best wines don't get exported.

Why would you think I don’t like being British.
There are some very special red wines but this is one Brit who is more than happy that the port is left to us.
Most Scots and Welsh I know frequently aren't keen with the handle “Brit”, frequently in jest - i meant it light heartedly and I did not intend to offend.

And don’t get me wrong I Love Port, but on my travels I’ve noticed its rarely on supermarket shelves outside of the UK

Many thanks to you you all for replying, very much appreciated. Off to buy some of the different ones recommended above. Happy days.
Kind regards
Mike and Pam

As people have said it’s hard to find a bad red.

If you like a box of wine sometimes we also buy the Santa Marta which is a bargain. We watched what the locals bought, followed their lead and were not disappointed 🍷

85 cents for a litre, I’m not saying it’s nice but it does the job.

No offence taken

We liked a branded red called Real Lavrador, which is an Alentejo wine - sold here by Wine Society at £6.25, way cheaper in Portugal. Also Monte Velho, which is a bit dearer but is on many restaurant wine lists.

I don't know what the tax on wine in Portugal is but I think in France and Spain it's very low as it's seen quite rightly as a normal part of the diet. In the UK it's £3 a litre plus Vat so there is usually going to be a pretty big difference in cost.

Vidiguera, good quality, red and whites varying prices but very reasonable.
Low miles as grown in vines near to us. Borba is another wine of reasonable quality and price.
Pias is also good quality boxed wine.I didn’t used to like boxes but this is a good one.
Most Portuguese wines are pretty good to be honest, even the house wines in the restaurants, enjoy.🍇

Never had a bad wine here, and never paid more than a fiver for a bottle😉
The 5 lt boxes of Piaz are good😜

A good tip when in the supermarkets ( Pingo, Continente etc) is to look for the ones with the biggest price reductions. You can always find a €10-15 bottle for €3/4 😉😎

I bet they're like the supermarket offers here or for that matter DFS and Mountain Warehouse stick a fiver on and take 6 off so a bit of a bargain but nothing like it appears.
