Picked up two bullet holes low down, they feel smooth to touch . Parked for weekend with blinds drawn and this morning pulled blinds to see a 12 inch lateral crack.. again smooth to touch.
What should I do ?
I'm traveling today, can a repair wait ?

Looks ok to me as they are below your line of vision.

As long as it does not interfere with your vision then it should be ok.

iI you check with Autoglass they will tell you the area in which it would fail MOT. then you can't drive it.

Unfortunately it looks like a new screen. severe damage to the wallet Ouch

Our Motorhome Insurance covers us for windscreen replacement or repair, so hopefully yours will be the same. We picked up a stone chip - we just had to phone Autoglass and they came out that day to attempt a repair, but in the end they had to replace the windscreen, which was done the next day.

ps. was the damage to your windscreen caused by stone chips?

Yes, the initial damage was stone chips

I'm more worried that the screen might shatter !
I'm also worried it may be written off as a new screen may be difficult to source or very expensive..
What about the mobile screen repair people..is that an option ?

I just has a non-MoT chip repaired by National Windscreens. Mobile repair was £48. The windscreen doesn’t look any better but I was assured there would be no further propagation.

That definitely can't be repaired so will need a new screen.
As Geo said it is also definitely an MOT failure.

It's safe to drive with however until you can get the replacement done. The only issue you may have is some damage to your wipers if they swipe over the damaged area, so you may be advised to pick up a new pair when you have your new screen.

Cost will depend on whether you have glass cover on your insurance. If you have then it doesn't matter how the damage happened and it won't affect your no claims.
If you don't have glass cover then it could be costly as A-class screens are generally more expensive than the standard Ducatos & Transits etc. you get with coachbuilts.

Nobody will attempt to repair a crack but the screen won't shatter. Laminated glass cracks, it doesn't shatter like door glass.

You won't have a problem getting a new screen. My mate just got a new one for a 1965 mercedes. Off the shelf .so to speak..

Fortunately I have anew MOT..phew..and just replaced wipers
I wonder if it is a fail as it's lowdown on passenger side
I will check my insurance and see what cover I have...it's due for renewal next month.
Appreciate the replies to date..thanks Team👍

I would be careful with the insurance. What you wouldn't want to do is change companies and the new one find out it happened before their cover started. I would get it replaced now on the existing policy. I think its a certain mot fail and even if it wasn't it makes your MH worth a lot less.

And if you enquire with your insurance but don’t cleaner still put it down as a claim I’ve had this in the past they are horrible

30 Years + Testing Tells me its a fail, no matter how hard you wish it was not
The Crack appears to be in Zone A bigger than 10mm =FAIL
The bulls eye is in Zone B bigger than 40mm =FAIL
It definitely wont shatter but each tiny crack from the Bulls Eye can run to the furthest edge of the screen

Just had the screen changed on my Hymer (a couple of hairline cracks in the black bit at the top).
Took Autoglass just over a week to get a screen from Travelworld.

We had a chip that turn into a crack on our A class screen.
Autoglass cocked up the replacement order and we had planned a five week trip to France.
We were advised that it was OK to drive so off we went. We marked the end of the crack with a marker pen each day and watched as it slowly advanced over the time we were away.
The crack got much longer but we made it back after several thousand km with no bother. By the time we got home Autoglass had got the correct screen and all was well.

I had the same. Mobile guy was only £20. Drilled the end of the hole and filled it with resin. He told me he does it often for buses and that it will stop it cracking further. Might be worth going to your local MOT garage and getting a proper opinion on whether it will pass.

That may be right for cars but it’s not correct for vans/buses/MHs etc with larger screens. Mine just got through with a crack over 200mm because it wasn’t obstructing the drivers vision.

Surely if driving and hit by a stone you would have noticed, they are really shockingly loud, which in respect of your initial post comment about not noticing till raising the blind, could it be air rifle or catapult.

It looks out of the drivers visual range is not obscuring the drivers view directly ahead, autoglass will advise you or any not station

Correct.. I noticed it as it was very loud... however only two bullet holes.
I parked at campsite and closed front blinds for the duration..
It ws only today when drawing blind back that the crack was there.. no idea when it started,,, but its got a bit longer today..
fortunayely the crack is moving in a southerly direction..

Lenny,
Mines a Hymer B584..any idea how much it was ?

Lenny HB
Mine is a B678DL so the screen is a bit rarer as they only made them for 2-3 years.
The paperwork the Autoglass guys had said it was £2054 + VAT, my excess was only £75 on windscreen.
Do make sure they supply a genuine OEM screen.

Sorry your Original post didn't read as I got hit by a stone just a couple of chips, until, the following morning there's a crack as well.

oh well hope you get sorted and your insurance covers an A class windscreen

It’s strange how the cracks only seem to appear or get longer when the van is parked and not when you’re on the move.

Richard.

The day after my MOT a crack appeared on my screen. I drive a Renault Master and it took a couple of weeks before the insurance recommended firm Auto Windscreens could fit me in.
As an aside their equipment allowed one man to fit this large screen by himself, amazing.
A second aside, the CritAire sticker, if you have one, cannot be removed as the ink is the adhesive. I have photographed the label and laminated it.
Do not wait, get the screen replaced a.s.a.p. PLEASE!

It passed the day before I got it done! The windscreen chap showed me it would pass using templates he had.

the cost should not be a consideration, pretty much every vehicle insurance has glass cover. A glass claim does not usually affect any no claims discount. So just the glass excess to pay which is usually £75 or below

stone chip repairs are no excess as well

Just checked my insurance and the max is £1000 windscreen cover ....with £100 excess...

I think I'll get a quote for replacement before going further..

I had a chip which turned into a crack on a Dethleffs, similar to Hymer. The crack grew quite quickly while driving until it reached the edge of the screen, which seemed to release the pressure and then it stopped. Replaced by Autoglass but when it rained it leaked like a sieve, they had to refit it. Luckily it rained while I was still in the UK.
