Windscreen replacement came up in another insurance related thread which I posted and I thought I might mention some info for general interest.

A relative of mine is a graduate engineer working in the design department of a prestigious British (German) manufacturer.

He was telling me that it was becoming increasingly difficult for windscreen companies to hold the exact correct windscreen for vehicles and also to fit them due to the amount of technology imbedded into the screen and the associated electronics and connections and the potential for problems if errors are made.
I think this will become more and more complicated as vehicles move to greater autonomy.

I bet we could have to wait for one as it's heated.

Also fitting by the roadside or at your home address is not possible if you have adaptive cruise control with a forward facing camera/radar. You have to attend Autoglass or equivalent and be on a flat floor with distance gauges.

This years insurance carries a £95 excess on screen and £20 excess for screen chip repairs
Ordinary car screens like mine were previously covered free under a fully comp policy
New stealth increase me thinks.

Nah dont worry too much, it will take Fiat decades longer to fit any complicated windscreen, they have got to get the instrument binacle sorted out first.

I have adaptive cruise control on my car (Suzuki) and the radar thingy is part of the grill not the windscreen.

Last trip away couple of weeks ago picked up a very minor chip .Looked worse from inside looking out which made me think it was possibly a deeper chip than I first thought.
Contacted Autoglass via my insurer (Caravangaurd) who came to house next day. Chips repaired FOC no excess, full screen replacement £100 excess with no consequence on no claims.
Transpired the guy checked it out with a magnifier and concluded that no action was required. Was a scuff only.
He just cancelled the job all at no expense to me or no claims affected.
