Windows 11

What feature has Windows 11 got that isn’t in your current operating system?

If you’re now on Windows 10, that’ll continue with full patching support for a year or two. 2024 I think 🤔
If you’re on an older version than W10 then maybe your computer is on too old a hardware base for W11 😳

If you’re asking about stability, take faith in the work of beta testers earlier this year and that W11 has been out a several weeks now and get it. 👍🏻 Assuming you’ve tested for hardware compatibility 🤪

I have used Windows in its various forms for about 30 years. Microsoft were notorious in the past for having a good version of Windows which was then followed by a poor version. That is why I waited a while before adopting any new version, which enabled me to skip the bad ones.

Microsoft say they will support Windows 10 until mid 2025 so you have plenty of time to find out how good 11 is. The frustration for me is that I have a five and a half year old Microsoft Surface Pro computer that is still performing well but can't be upgraded to Windows 11 because its chip does not have the necessary security features. I also have some pretty old software that I use which works OK on 10, but not sure about 11. Another reason for me to keep Windows 10 for a while.

OMG. yes Windows Vista 🤬

But now many OS’s are you counting for Windows 10? 🤔
The Windows 10 as it is today is not the Window 10 of old.
It’s had at least 6 rebuilds and feature creep.
They {MS} launched it as their last OS that would evolve.
Windows 11 existing is a bit confusing 🤪

I am not on the Windows 11 beta / early build test due to an absence of the motherboard security widget but W11 looks like it’ll share the Windows 10 source code but with the stuff for lots of backwards compatibility ripped out. Not sure though.

I started using Windows 11 about a week ago after buying a new laptop/notebook that was eligible for a free 'update'.

In all honesty, I haven't noticed any significant changes other than some menu changes..

According to my computer expert son its no better 10 and many ways worse, he's not bothering
Plus you will need a modern hi spec computer to be able to install it.

I downloaded it onto my tower unit after enabling TPM in the boot menu.
It runs ok but goes out of its way to get you to use the Microsoft Edge browser.
I use Chrome and had to download it as the update removes it, their efforts to get me to use it, only put me off even more.

Hi Robert,
what benefits does W11 give over 10 ? Is it worth the pain of switching over?
Hi Dave.
Not noticed much by way of improvement, slightly smoother, slightly quicker from page to page, but nothing negative to report at all.
My laptop was new in the summer, so I don't know how an older machine would deal with it?

I have always waited at least a year before upgrading because my peripherals always need loads of work to get them to work afterwards or binned because they just will not work.
sounds as though not worth bothering with yet👍🏻

Totally agree Dave, I really use mine for surfing & for downloading movies.

Hi Robert,
what benefits does W11 give over 10 ? Is it worth the pain of switching over?
The primary benefit of windows 11 is to support the latest generation of Intel CPU's with their "power" and "efficiency" core structure through it's "thread director". This itself benefits greatly from the latest DDR5 RAM which is also only available (currently) on the latest intel compatible motherboards. As Microsoft has stated they will continue support for win10 for a number of years yet, there is no pressing need to upgrade right now and if you are doing anything with gaming i would strongly suggest you don't upgrade yet due to a number of issues relating to how the new multi-core system is interpreted by older DRM systems.

For those experts out there with your fingers on the pulse. Any news as to how Windows 11 works with legacy software and peripherals please?

I still use MS Office 2006 programmes, especially Outlook (on all the time), Word and Excel. Also use the MS Money Plus Home and Business Sunset Edition for my self- employed accounts. I also have a 10 year old Brother inkjet printer and scanner which is as cheap as chips to run and produces good enough results for me

I don't notice any appreciable difference. Had to enable TPM in the BIOS.

I have installed Win11 on 3 different machines simply to see how it would run on older/different hardware.
Oldest PC, still reasonable spec which is used for CAD, upgrade didn't like the PC as it didn't have a TPM chip. Bit of jiggery pokery in the registry and Win 11 installs, Not the greatest experience to be honest, but all applications reinstalled OK, that PC had Office 2007. FreeCAD and HeeksCAD both loaded and worked fine.
Old lenovo laptop much the same. Win 11 loaded slightly faster then Win 10 but no real noticeable difference.
Year old laptop, installed with no changes required and all applications reinstalled with no issues, but virtually all software on this one is relatively up to date.
I didn't really see any improvement in upgrading and as various features have yet to be enabled in Win 11 I have restored my CAD PC and current laptop back to their previous configurations from disk images and reinstalled Linux Mint on the old Lenovo as it works so much better on older hardware then any Windows version.
If you are running older hardware that doesn't have a TPM chip, whilst you can install Win 11 there is a possibility that it will not update without one in future, so it could be a dead end anyway.
From past experience with Windows upgrades I usually wait to fully update/upgrade until various updates have been released, as there are usually numerous issues identified by the earlier adopters, used to wait for Service Pack 1 as MS used to call it.

the earlier adopters,
The earlier adopters for most of the hardware and software companies are members of the public and even then, staff will of earlier been roped into testing upcoming products.
Bugs exist in any age of code. You just need to choose when you want to buy in.
But having no reason to adopt a new thing - like a new feature - should be a deterrent 👍🏻

I've got a couple of old laptops that I fire up once in a blue moon running Windows XP. Just taking up space really. I should recycle them.

Anyone recently updated to Windows 11? My machine say it is ready to go but I don't want / can't be bothered with any problems. Should I / Should I not?

I recently went from 10 to 11, I can't say that their's much change for my usage, start menu a bit different, I don't do gaming or film editing stuff though.

No harm in updating if you're able to.

Do you see something in Windows 11 you need? Like a new feature or change to an existing one you’d like?
On compatible hardware Win11 has better security features.

Windows 10 will get security patches for awhile so you’ve time to assess the situation.

The Windows 10 OS itself has had several a major feature releases and is quite different to the initial release.
Are you on the current release of Windows 10? Build 21H2

I've upgraded to W11 on my PC and one laptop (with one change to BIOS to allow installation), very similar to W10 with no massive changes. My other laptop wasn't compatible. Keeps it to the latest spec but it's up to you whether it's worth the hassle.

Just read the blurb from Microsoft. Not keen on what I would seemingly lose if I upgrade so will stick with 10 for the moment.

Thanks for your replies and comments.

Oh!! What does the blurb suggest you'll lose?
My hardware is missing the TPM thing so not an immediate concern for me but others on the cusp of going to Win11 maybe interested yy

Too much to list but when my machine said it was ready it offered a load of info to read. The details that put me off were contained therein.
