Anyone have one ? Seems like a great idea but never got around to trying one. We don't watch tv, got the ipod full of fab music but fancied something french, while we're in France ? I've seen a few models, most seem to be 1 minute wind up for 30 mins music, also 1 had a teeny solar panel.

:france:

That was quick  !!!! Yeah does sound a pain for 30 mins, but thought it'd be nearly the same as listening to an old piece of vinyl then taking a minute to remove, replace sleeve and pop another on lol

30 mins??? Never. Its like those adds saying that your van fridge only draws 4 amps....yes, in Greenland, mid winter, with the door open........

Five mins was the limit, then, as the music fades.........

Ah ! found a few with solar panels and one where you wind for 2 mins and get 2 hours play. Back to more research, tho would still welcome any experiences from your good selves :)

Had one of the very early (mid 1990's) original bayliss windup radios.

60 winds of the handle would give around 30 minutes of radio.

I would expect today, with modern componants, they would give an hour or more for the same input.

Like any audio equipment, the amp will use more than its share of power and in the day it would have been bulky transistors and diodes.
Today it would be a silicon chip using much less power.

It does if you live in Africa and the witch doctor charges and arm and a leg for batteries.

But in Europe, barmy idea when £1 will keep a radio in batteries for a year.

Valuable resources Brian.

Batteries contain harmful products and cost money to produce.
A spring, clockwork mechanism and small motor will outlast hundreds of batteries.

When we are allowed radios on (work)site i am hard pushed to get a week from 4 x AA cells.

If the radios are anything like those wind up torches, they are just about the next best thing to useless.

Roberts radio 4 me every time! Takes rechargeable batteries, I take a few sets on a long trip. On EHU, leave batteries in & they charge up when plugged in. Great sound, DAB & FM and latest one has a solar panel so u can place it near window during day?! Can't beat it!

I used a wind up radio for years.

It was brilliant!

Now I use my Galaxy Note 2 phone for listening to the radio via the internet.

Mind you I thought it was winding me up tonight.

I switched it on and it said Milton Keynes was beating Man U*d 4-0.

JJ

PS. My windup torch is excellent too.

Being realistic and practical, we don't particularly want to rely on hook ups while we're trundling around for the next few years. We already need to charge 2 smartphones, my camera batts, the ipod and speaker and the sat nav. We both love radio and don't really want to keep using batteries. We've looked at the Roberts but can't find any in depth reviews. This one looks promising tho ....... Great price and it stops there. Wld hopefully use solar a lot, tho in the uk, we may get a sore arm :) Thanks for your help, appreciated.
