I know that strictly speaking this is the Solar Power sub-forum but I thought this was still probably the best place for this thread...

My travels will hopefully take me to largely sunny parts so I do plan to invest in some solar panels. However I hope to hug the coastline a lot of the time so I thought wind turbines might also be worthwhile.

Do many peopke double up in this way? Can the two energy sources be compatible or do they need to be independant? Presumably you can't have your tubine up whilst driving so you are limited on when you can take advantage of it?

I will be interested to see the replies to this. It has struck me before that a turbine will often work when solars don't, for example at night or on cloudy or wet and windy days.

Might be quite noisy if attached to your van.

Dingray had a vertical wind turbine, I think it was very quiet. Had thought about one, but never got around to it...

You can link as many charging sources as you wish without causing any problems. However wind power isn't very useful. It feels as though it should be but only boats and those who camp atop mountains seem to make it work.

Just sold one, 50amp max output. They need to be as high as possible, and in completely open areas, that's why they work on boats. On motorhomes imo not worth the trouble.

Was shown round a diy conversion that had a wind generator of the 'fan' style. There was a stiff breeze blowing and it was quite noisy, I don't think I would like one.

Some did fit them to narrowboats, but most took them of due to vibration and noise.

Looked into them when we had our first van. Came to the conclusion to get any usable output you need gale force winds. The argument for having some power when the sun goes down doesn't work either as most of the time winds die down at night.
You can't beat a big battery bank and loads of solar.

Probably work quite well when you are driving along a motorway!
