WIN XP Boot From USB Stick?? (1 Viewer)

Can anyone tell me what changes i need to make to a laptop running Windows XP to make it boot up from a USB stick running Linux for a software application i want to try??

I belive i need to make some changes to the BIOS but have no idea how to do this but i can get into the BIOS by pressing the F2 key at startup.

Oh yes and how do i find out the MAC code for the built in wifi card?? Its not on the back of it anywhere

Hi Dazzer,

You need to ensure the Laptop Boot sequence has the usb device listed as the first one the Lappy accesses.

What Laptop is it?

If you run ipconfig /all from the command prompt it'll give you the ip address allocated to all the network interfaces and the physical address (MAC) of the device.

To run ipconfig go to Start/Run and type in cmd to bring up a DOS session.
At the flashing cursor type ipconfig /all.(There's a deliberate space between the ipconfig and the /all)

Here's a sample ipconfig pic.

F2 is my route into Bios. However have just had a look into mine and the only options available to me is
Diskette,
CD Drive
or
Hard Drive.
Not much help is it.

Hi when I type in ipconfig the dos box flashes up on screen, and then disappears, any ideas how to stop this?

There should be somewhere in the BIOS that allows you to enable the USB at start up, ie before Windows loads.

Sounds like you're typing it straight into the RUN box at the bottom of the screen Olley.I've just tried it.

Type in cmd in the Run Box.The dos box should then be on the screen.Then type in ipconfig /all.:thumb:

The laptop is a Samsung Q1 Ultra tablet pc running XP.

It is at home so i will have a look at the BIOS thingy when i get home.

Thanks for that ive now found the MAC address and it connects to my wireless network at home :thumb:

I still cant seem to get it to start up from the usb stick though but i have managed to find the boot up page. It reads like this

Boot priority order:
USB CDROM: Not Installed
IDE HDD: Toshiba MK4009GAL
USB KEY:Not Installed
USB HDD: Not Installed
PCI BEV:Broadcom MBA

Excluded from boot order:
USB ZIP:Not Installed
USB LS120:Not Installed

Any ideas what I need to be changing to make it boot up from the USB mem stick?? Cos this lot above is all Greek to me

Did you check USB support at boot up is enabled? I think it is often called legacy support.

Hi Dazzer,

Move the usb key to the top of the boot list.

Then boot the PC with the memory stick in the usb port.

Done that and it still boots up into windows although the USB stick does flash when it boots up. I have made the stick bootable and there are no other files on it other than the files needed to run the program....any other suggestions??? :thumb:

Is there any particular reason you want to boot in Linux? Have you considered running Linux in Windows?

There are a few ways to do this, have a look at andlinux.org

Yes,

Ust partition magic to split the Hard disk into 2 partitions and make the PC Dual Booting (Load the linux install on the second partition.)

It keeps it all clean then in case you decide to uninstall.

You have got Partitionmagic....Haven't you? PM me otherwise.

Sounds like you've got the right boot options but not a bootable version of linux on the stick.Is it the installation files you've got on it?Just a thought.

Does it access the usbstick BEFORE any cd/dvd,floppy or hard disk drive?

BTW What "flavour" of Linux are you using?Assuming it's open source.

We've just moved as a company and B+++++ BT haven't fitted the lines yet so I'm on a Web 'n' walk mobile stick attached by 4 usb extension cables running outside.

Legacy support really includes support for older hardware, hence the "legacy" bit, ie its OLD in computer terms. Any older equipment which has gradually been replaced by newer technology is referred to as "legacy" equipment and new computers that support the older stuff are said to provide "legacy support." All makes a great deal of sense, of course

Have looked at the Batch file and am just testing it now.

Loaded it onto the USB Pen Drive and It works Fine.

Tried it on a laptop in here.

On this HP Turion if you press esc on bootup you can then choose the boot medium.

The Linux Program works fine.
