on & off for some time!
after spending a night overlooking the ocean, near carvoeiro, on the algarve. we we visited by the local boys in blue that proceeded to hand out fine notifications to all those present, ‘camping is not permitted anywhere, you must camp on an official site. Do it again and we take your driving licence from you’. All m/homes were issued with these and all nationalities.

They're OUR own worst enemies!!! (Not your friends personally btw)!

They've spoilt it for themselves and everyone else!

Yes - they are asking for trouble having chairs tables and often awnings out - it’s a lovely spot but not a camp site of any sort - you bring it on yourself if you are seen to be camping to get moved on or fined!

Thanks for the informative post :)

The cops will do what they ( or the local mayor) want, and only a fool would argue. It's regular news about vans being moved on in Portugal and Spain. What I was wondering was if those being moved were just ' parked' or were all set up with stuff outside and awnings out, windows open, steps etc ( i.e. Anything more than the footprint of a parked vehicle, as that's the difference FYI!)
If the latter, then fair enough, expect to be moved and fined, If just simply parked for an overnight stop in a quiet place ( just as a car may park up!) then it's a different story and of more concern to most.

Yes apparently there were gazebos up with outside kitchens in them, trailers left while the Moho was off site etc etc. Our friends were overnighting on their way home.

Camping = no levelling blocks, no mats, no curtains / blinds closed, steps down, no rubbish, chairs or tables, awnings outside van and no overnight sleeping! This is what we were told. Police were very polite, even shook our hands. It was all rather funny really. we were parked with the step down

AFAIK when parking nothing can 'jut out' from the vehicle that wouldn't normally do so when in use (being driven) so no doors open, steps out, no furniture, awning etc, no hab windows pushed open etc but there's no restriction on having roof windows/vents up or cab windows wound down (or sliding ones open) as they could be left that way in transit, ... but I don't think having a satellite dish up would be allowed.

What are they like in Central and Northern Portugal?

Are the laws prohbiting 'camping' just local to the Algarve and the South.

If the laws also cover C. and N. are they enforced in the same way?

We are one of 18 vans in San Jose at the moment, so I hope not as its a nice place to stay for a few days. Heading round to Cabo de Gata for a few days and then to Las Negras so we will see what happens.

On our very first night 'Wilding' on a Barragem in Northern Portugal (after four nights on the Aire in Braganca, we were instructed by two senior (in years) Motorhomers who were Portuguese.

They said that providing you have nothing out of the 'Van with no windows open or even the electric step out than you should stand firm and state, demand that you are parked.

I appreciate that a gun toting Policeman may come over as menacing but there is nothing wrong with having a polite conversation. He may be trying to cite the "Protective Leggings for Pidgeons Act" to you ie nonsense but stand your ground. If you ain't camping, than tell him/her so.

In las negras, as you hit town there is a sports pitch to your right, we parked on rough car park adjacent for 3 days last April. Excelllent for walking into village via beach.
