I read somewhere that if you set your width above a certain size in your vehicle profile, any planned route over the Dartford tunnel will be avoided on your sat nav.

I’ve searched for the post but cannot find it.

Can anybody recall the post please and what the maximum width is as I want to ensure my Garmin Camper 770 takes me from the North over the Dartford crossing in any route I plan.

Many thanks

Ignore the Garmin when you wish to take a different route. I often do that. It sounds a bit huffy until eventually it accepts my intentions.

Alternatively I understand Basecamp allows you to plan and enter your preferred route. Though I haven't tried it myself.

It might take longer but going anticlockwise round the M25 will avoid the Dartford Crossing as well as avoiding the LEZ charge (if your MH is an older non-exempt one).

M25 doesn't count for LEZ even on the parts that go inside it.

Set it to avoid Tolls or look at a map. I use the crossing most weeks the southbound bridge is most times ok the northbound tunnels are frequently a pain during normal times.

Can I ask why you want to avoid the crossing?

I DON‘T want to avoid the crossing.

I’ve got a new garmin camper 770 and you can put your vehicle dimensions in it.

I read a while back that somebody could not understand why their sat Nav avoided the Dartford crossing when planning and it took them through London instead.

A reply was, that you have to put the width to less than ???? as it is something to do with the crossing max width.

I’m trying to find out what the max width is so I can set mine slightly less.

I see, you shouldn't need to do it, most sat navs ask if you want to avoid toll roads, tap no and it will send you over the crossing instead of sending you through Blackwall tunnel

I’ve got the Garmin 770 Camping and put my size into it, width 2.3mtrs and it always takes me across the Dartford Tunnel route and never had a problem.

Makes sure you have toll roads ticked as you’ll end up going through London and the Rotherhide tunnel 😱😉

Hi ElddisNotElvis

I wonder if you may be being confused by an issue that did arise with the TT Truck unit . There was an issue with a map release resulting in the units avoiding the Dartford Crossing and I think there was some suggestion that reducing the width input resolved this matter. As far as I know this issue no longer arises with the TT units.

Regarding your unit can you not create some routes from various places that require the Crossing and input various widths to see if the unit then avoids the crossing. The simplest would be to seek a route from Tilbury area to say Sevenoaks. If the Garmin is like the TT GO Camper unit then you may find that it will refuse to accept a width above a certain amount.

Hi Spriddler

Actually the width restriction on the Dartford Crossing is 9 metres and the height restriction is 5 Metres. The former is a limit for abnormal loads which above a certain size have to be escorted through. The latter is Lane Specific in that lanes 1 & 2 are a maximum height of 4.8 metres and lanes 3 & 4, which feed the newest tunnel, are for vehicles up to 5 metres.

Ah, well in that case he can have the mother in law on the roof and still get through O.K. ;)

Thanks. I think it is this “2.75m” lane width. Somebody said make sure your vehicle profile is less than 2.75m, otherwise it won’t offer you the Dartford crossing. I am 2.69m with mirrors out, so I’m ok I guess👍

I'd put in the real width of the vehicle and ignore any sat nav instructions in your final approach. The crossings are pretty hard to miss as they're well signposted.

Hi ElddisNotElvis

TT GO Camper units will not accept a width entry of greater than 2.6m.

Only a very very bad sat nav will take you over the Dartford tunnel and you will get very wet 🤣

We had the same issue with our van... I had input 2.9m as width mirror edge to mirror edge and it tried to divert me. As I used to work at the crossing I just ignored the sat nav.

Mine is 2200mm wide I don’t count the wing mirrors as they can be pulled in. Even with them out ,still not as wide as normal lorry

Small world, many years ago the company I worked for had the term maintenance contract on the crossing. I spent most weekend nights on there for 5 years.

I don't think I'd want to go through the tunnel at 9 metres wide

If you are heading South you will not be routed through the tunnels at all, you will go over the bridge. Only exceptions would be late night planned maintenance works or a major accident on the bridge.

Just check the weather forecast. If strong winds, don’t go over the bridge or if too strong, they close it anyway.

Are you sure you're not using "shortest Roite" setting?
I tend to use Easy setting when I am getting to an area.

I have the slightly older Garmin 760 Camper and have the width set at 2.4m, a bit more than our actual width.
We use the Dartford crossing all the time with no bother from 'Mrs. Garmin'.
Just make sure you allow Tolls in Navigation/Avoidances.

Richard.

Heavy goods vehicles use the m 25 and dartford tunnel
I think a double decker may not fit though. :whistle2: :whistle2:

Coming from the north there are three major roads onto the M25. M1, A1M and M11, you could chuck in the M40 and the A12 at a push. All of those roads are very well signposted to Dartford crossing, why anyone would want to add vehicle dimensions to those routes is beyond me. Solving problems that don't exist?
