Why would an MOT tester do this? (2 Viewers)

Main dealers tend to have a massive check list for servicing but actually little of substance done.
I volunteer in the vehicle section of the Shuttleworth Collectio and used to look after the ‘routine’ servicing of the cars-the “massive list” rang a bell with me-when I serviced our 1920 Bean it has from memory 42 grease nipples on the chassis and steering…….and that’s before you get to the brakes, wheel bearing, and engine!
I am currently ‘restoring’ our 1900 Locomobile Steam Car-spent the last few months making new engine component-the pistons are 3 part and made from spun cast iron-lots of fun!

My ex MoT tester says vehicles must be tested as presented and not after a service, including rectifying any problems. This is to give a true representation to VOSA of the condition of the vehicles which are on the road.
For needing wiper blades he would have given an advisory.

Sounds like bull 💩 to me

Nice one.

Difference with the main dealers is they are charging you at least £100 to check a lot of things 😉😊

My Ducato wiper blades lasted 4 years before I asked for them to be replaced at service time. The dealership charged me less than I had paid for Euro Car Parts Bosch ones which I had to return for a refund because they didn't fit.

Newbie. Motor home experience began on 1/8/2020.
I used to use a small garage in Leicester before we moved. They were a family business and always very reasonable prices but they started to struggle financially and I noticed that at mot time they almost always said it needed new wipers so I started putting new ones on before I took it.

can you let me know which garage please Wino ;)

Think yourself lucky you didn’t get the MoT at a Halfords center 😳
Like every chain, there can be good and bad.

I was given a free Halfords MOT code with a purchase.

Took the car in (a ten-year old MX-5). Passed with no advisories.

I do my own servicing, so would have been surprised by a fail.

Edited to add: this was last month.

Couple of months ago the DiL took her car to Halfords for an MoT.

Wish I’d known as I would have told her don’t.

Any way quite a few items in the list on the failure side.

One being the front indicators weren’t the same colour.
They were both amber and five of us couldn’t see a colour difference.

The other items were to say the least questionable.

I said to the manager the items were put on there to get the work out of it.
I was not a happy bunny as I service and look after her car, we don’t skimp on anything that needs fixing.

I'm a newbie
There is a very good reason for this. A fail followed by an easy reinspection and pass shows on the system that the test centre is doing its job.. but pass, pass, pass, pass will result in a DVLA snap inspection
A name thats stuck in my head is Noor Hussain from Accrington, it was 11 years ago now , he can't be that bright , no fails at all 🤣

I would not let halfords fix a puncture on my bike

I was told that a tester is officially not allowed to rectify defects, even changing a wiper blade.
My last MOT, I had just returned from Germany in my left hooker. Summer, so forgot the headlight diverters.
Very nice chap at the mot centre waited for me to get some diverters and then spent 10 minutes with the head-light gadget making sure that they were in exactly the right spot. And he had people waiting. Pass, no advisories. Definitely be using him again.
