I'm just a bit curious... With Ryanscare, do you put the motorhome in the overhead lockers or do you need to check it in as luggage? ;)

in the late 60,s and early 70,s it was 28 quid 15 nights full board . we once had to stay 5 days longer . so complained and got 5 quid compensation . but no extra charge for the extra 5 days .
then you could get a tailor made leather jacket for 16 quid . buy three big bottles of brut . sell them and almost have a free holiday . those were the days . celts ciggarettes in machines for something like 10 pesatas for ten . buy imco austrian lighters for about 2 shilling . flick knives sold every where . idealfor yound budding businessmen . ha ha .

So, your holiday only starts at your destination then.......mine starts when I turn the key on our drive no matter where we are going.

Oh I totally agree with you, when we leave, we are on holiday. Our problem is that we sometimes are limited on the time we can spend away, so 175 miles to Portsmouth scores over 285 miles to Dover and Calais to our destination adds another 150 miles on, so a total of 500 miles for the return journey plus the 2 nights stops eats into our time.

We choose the overnight crossing so that we can maximise our time, less driving, more time for us. If we have more time, then we have more crossings to choose from, unfortunately, this month we don't have the time to spend driving.

Realise that but even so £100 of diesel and two free aires is still a long way off that ferry price, plus the cost of sites in Devon and Cornwall and you won't get there without useing a fair drop of diesel, not knocking your decision , everyone is entitled to do as they like , just com pairing costs;)

Yes, everyone is entitled to do as they like, but £125 for diesel is fine, we have never used the aires, but 2 nights on sites would only cost about £10 a night anyway. Our decision is based entirely on the time factor in this instance and the fact that we couldn't afford 4 days travelling to spend 3 days at our destination. :(

Perhaps the shareholders of the ferry operating companies, who may include some of us either directly or through pension funds, require said companies to endeavour to make a profit and pay dividends.

I believe that is how capitalism and the free market economy works. :)

Then dont have a final destination.....make it a touring holiday or fly to the destination and hire a car to get around.

Just looked at prices for a January crossing with DFDS, PHEW they are up by 100% on last years prices and almost 4 times the price we paid the previous year, sorry but at that price we will not be using them.

Ld/DFDS in January, Dieppe-Newhaven: €179 (6.5m. MH) - that's for a return, Jan/Feb. ... less 20% of course, if you're under 25 or over 60...

We traveled newhaven to dieppe route and thought that is a lot of port space and staff to pay from 1 ferry. It is only 1 ferry going back and forth, can not see it being a big earner for them.

Keeps going though, I went on it 4 years ago and thought the same then, but then if it only goes once a day I suppose it's always full

Going Dieppe/Newhaven again at the end of the month - for €79 (return)... BF want £229 Le Havre/Portsmouth  ... Been over 6 times already this year plus at least 4 times a year for the last umpteen years - so saved a fortune. Long may they continue!

Ferry departs Newhaven twice a day. 10am and 11pm. 4 hour journey.
Being just a 30 minute drive away we always use this route to France.
For some time the Dieppe Port has been subsidised by its local Government - unlike Newhaven which gets little from East Sussex County Council. Newspaper reports however warn that the Ferry link might close because of the loss of the port subsidy at Dieppe. Would be a shame if we lossed this link:(
