We use a tablet for sat nav along with Sygic and sometimes it seems to have a bit of a 'silly' moment and wants to take us on a little detour for no apparent reason ... this was one recent example! We used to get it occasionally with our TomTom unit too ... anyone else have a wandering sat nav?

Ours did something similar.. in a traffic jam on M?? And it asked "do you want to take alternative route?" so I said yes.
"At next junction leave the motorway" it instructed... it then took me down slip road, around round about and back up slip road to rejoin motorway..
Tried to do same at next exit, which I of coarse ignored.

Its even worse when you have Garmin+Google maps+ the wife with the maps out, all disagreeing with each other on which route to take! "Do a U turn", "Do a U turn", "Recalculating", "Recalculating", then if if anything like my devices....they all go very quiet when you need them most, even the wife does!:swear:
Obviously I always listen to my wife, its cost us a fortune on diesel, but I luv her, don't I ? Even if she has the map upside down!
Remedial Action after many years:
Breath deeply, count to 10 at least! ,apologise best you can to cars arround you that you may have carved up in your indecisive actions, Pull over when you can, engine off, handbrake on, kettle on for a nice fresh brew, and relax, reset all devices, Gaffer Tape the wife!:giggle:(y);)

I'm a slave to the sat nav. I often wonder what goes on in their heads, they are sentient beings, right?

I do try to council mine sometimes. 🤷‍♂️

Usually along the lines of, ‘Are you sure you want to take me down that road’? ‘Come on now, that’s a really silly thing to try to make me do’.

Or the direct approach, ‘There’s not a chance in hell am I listening to your directions!’.

I sometimes think I’ve been overly harsh and apologise.:(

Yes, they do have feelings.;)

Both of mine Tom Tom and xcody do this ...not to bad if you can see its plan and ignore it but a pure pita when you don't see it and it brings you off only to rejoin on the other side of the roundabout

Especially when you've had to sit in a traffic queue at the roundabout  :mad:

Mine does this going through Bradford when I'm on my way to Saltaire. Thankfully I usually remember to ignore it.

I use Google maps on my phone now, rather than a sat nav for the added benefit of traffic updates.

Our sat nav has always been called Ted.

How on earth i ever got around the country in the 60s without Sat Nag is beyond me, but we did.
would stop and ask someone. directions were just about always given by way of such and such pub :ROFLMAO:

I asked my old boss for directions to a garage on the far side of Glasgow, just off the M 8 heading for Paisley. He told me to take the slip road straight after "Howdens". Took me ages to find the place and when I got there late, and was explaining, the guy said "Howdens shut down and was demolished eight years ago !"🤦‍♂️

Ours likes it's silly detours, it also has no sense, if we're facing the opposite direction to where we want to go when we set off instead of wanting us to turn round it'll often add a few miles to take us on a 180 degree route for no reason, nuts!

There must be a glitch or bad mapping though as sometimes it tells us to stay left then take the right turn on roundabouts or road junctions when it's clear we should be in the right lane.

In Ireland we had to be careful as there are a lot of roads which are very narrow with grass in the middle so had to occasionally ignore it and continue on until a more suitable one came up.

If any one of those links that make up the roundabout is coded wrong so it has a length of zero, then as far as the satnav is concerned, that will be the shortest (and fastest) route.

I haven't seen Google Maps do anything like this in a while. Worst I've seen is on long motorway merges, it insists you take the right lane because it's probably quicker by 0.05 seconds or something...

Or when the GPS position is drifting a bit and it thinks you've gone off on a parallel route.

Generally they are pretty damned reliable and robust. Far better than a paper map that's riddled with errors and out of date before it's even printed.

Google 2021. I guess they didn't close off the through road!

I only use the iPad apple map, but it does like to have a wibble every now and again. Like the time it took me on a 30 second quicker shortcut, that had me doing hill starts because of the lights at the top of a very very narrow road and then mere millimetres from some poor guy in his brand new Rolls Royce after he had to straddle the kerb to let me by 😇🙄

But I usually get on great with it and the latest update on the new iPad is pretty good and free, less network 👍🏻 but there are times when it says turn left and there’s nooooooo way I’m going down the tracks it suggests 😀

So the satnav is actually suggesting the correct route. The issue is that it's still showing a road that has since closed because the new Caernarfon bypass (A487) has recently opened and now there are several new junctions.

Blame it on the architect.
Supposed to be over or under the road like most are but his measuring was a bit suspect.
The A487 is a completely new bypass. So initially the left the old straight-thru road in place while they built the roundabout first off to one side. When it was complete, they diverted main road on to the new roundabout, meaning the road has bit of a kink. The old straight-thru road will get demolished. It's all at-grade.

If you are ever bored, and fancy a good laugh, switch on your Garmin Camper, set it to voice recognition, she will ask you where you want to go......then try any place name, any address, any post code, and see what she comes back with!
As irnbru will verify, don't try saying "Thirty Three" you will not get anywhere using that, you have to say Three, Three, but she still wont be able to recognise where you want to go.
What she does come back with is hilarious at times, you can confuse her even more with an accent or three.
Try it & see:LOL:
Strange though that our BMW Sat Nav not only has a lovely respectful ladies voice, but instantly recognises the address you voice over to her, and the route automatically appears on the centre screen.
So it is Garmin at fault, others can do it much better.

My frustration lies with the persistence in taking Motorways where and whenever it can, if you are away in some strange land you might not notice but driving an area you know well with the SatNav on for accurate speed or Cameras you often get a route directing you miles out of your way to a Motorway and know there’s a better way.
