Hi all,
calling into Whitby tomorrow, any recommendation of where to eat etc. Best fish chips 😋 and places to go
Thanks
Geoff & Lynne

My last couple of visits to The Magpie were less enthusing than my memories of previous visits 😢

We like the Blitz cafe on church street in the old town. During the day it’s a cafe after five it’s a tapas bar.
As the name suggests it’s a wartime theme. We have been in there with muttly .

I always find Fish & Chips at the Coast very average as they are serving a captive market go inland greatly improved.
The Fish and Chip shop in Hawes l can highly recommend and a good place to stay and lots to see and do.

We were there this last week and eat at Hedleys (Just over the bridge up on the right) from the harbour. No overnighting in the harbour any more. We stayed a couple of nights at
N 54°26’22.5672” W -0°39’52.794”
54.439602, -0.664665 Whitby Blue bank hill. along with about 6 to 7 other vans. No issues

Park up on the cliff top North Terrace. Get there early (9- 10am) 3 hours free parking. You need a parking clock disc that can be obtained from any newsagent showing the time you leave the van. We saw several cars put a piece of paper with the date and time on the dash this I suspect will do as it states the same as the disc clock

We like Trenchers. We saw Patrick Stewart in there the last time we ate there.

Are you sure. His brother looks quite like him and lives in our village although it could be he was visiting. Were 3 miles inland from Whitby I would recommend the Riverside chippy near Parkol marines shipyard or the fish box opposite the co-op. There's also the new one on Sandsend that do nice but pricey fish tacos. The chip shop in our village (Sleights) is very good too.

Where do people park in Whitby these days. Is the marina car park still available to mh's?

It was definitely Patrick Stewart!

No, sadly. We often used to have a couple of nights there but no more. In fact we’ve stopped going to Whitby now.

Tried Magpie fish and chips last night, long queue to sit down short queue to take away. At six in the evening they only had one piece of cod with a ten minute wait to fry more, so took that and shared. Nothing special! Cycled into town from the Whitby Holiday park, went in via road and returned by pushing bikes (assisted by motor) up the cobbled path next to the long flight of steps to the abbey. A nice pint at the brew pub at the top of the hill then back to the van.

As you walk down the main street alongside the harbour there's a fish & chips Restaurant called Papa's, its fish & chips were first class when we ate there 2 year ago and very very reasonable you may have to join small queue outside but well worth it.

As a resident of Sleights near Whitby, might I suggest Mr Chips. Trenchers was good last time we went there also.

Whitby is not very Motorhome friendly though. The council (Scarborough Borough Council) have been persuaded that we are an unruly bunch of ragamuffins who empty their toilet cassettes in public rainwater drains. It would be good to disabuse people of this label.

I can also recommend our local chippy in Sleights Eskdale Fisheries (same chap who had Robin Hoods Bay chippy). We get our take home from there every fortnight. Eat in as well.

we were at the Fishermans Wife a week or two ago. Really fantastic piece of fish with very light crispy batter, I also has good views over the harbour and beach

We are off to Whitby tomorrow, well, close enough to cycle in anyway. I will take note of these suggestions as well, thanks (y)

Stayed in Whitby a few years back. Found it to be one of the friendliest places going. Very dog friendly too. Ate at various places, all very good. Lovely place.

Was in Whitby a few weeks ago and went to Abbey Warf at the bottom of 199 steps. Fish and chip were better than Magpie and if your lucky you can get a table on the upstairs terrace overlooking the harbour.
