Which way is your MH door hinged? (1 Viewer)

We popped into Marquis last week to ask about getting a Fiamma handle fitted. We were told that the door on our Majestic 165 is very unusual in that it is hinged on the right (opens to the rear of the vehicle).

So, quick survey thing - if you have a RHD van with the habitation door on the passenger side, which way is your door hinged?

The hinges should always be at the front of the van
If it is not fastened or closed then the wind force will hold it shut or close it
If the other way around it will be held open or flap outwards

Having said that I can see two caravans from where I'm sitting that contradict that. Common sense and safety should prevail

If the hinges are to the rear they were always known as " suicide doors " for obvious reasons.

I've seen them hinged both ways, as said you would think it was common sense to have them hinged on the front .. but is it such an issue ?

Let's say you forget to close and drive off .. hinged at the rear and it will simply stay open.. you will soon notice and stop... hinged on the front and it might close .. maybe not if it's on a latch.. or it may slam shut and break the catch ?

I don't particularly see it as a safety issue.. nor do some motor manufacturers..

if you have a lhd the hab door will be hinged on the rightoh:

There is probably a reason to hang to the rear..

for example.. some vans have a fridge right by the door.. if it opened across the vents that would be poor design.. or perhaps a cassette toilet hatch.. not a real issue but not convenient.

Certain that at one time there was a ruling that all doors must be hinged on the leading edge.
Off for a little chat with Mr Google to see how good the memory is.

The car in question and all the latest cars with front opening rear doors have a electronic interlock to stop the doors opening when in motion and or stopping the car starting if the doors are not shut, so not quite the same as the habitation door on a motorhome/ caravan,

Do people generally sit by the hab door in in motorhome .. or indeed a caravan .. that would be illegal on the move.

the only type I can think of is a PVC where there is sometimes a seat by the sliding door.. and that opens backwards.. no interlock, no start inhibit.. in fact white van man can be seen driving with it open..

the main point I made was I didn't see it as a safety issue.. nor obviously do the manufacturers ..

anyway.. I fail to see why you thought it necessary to point that out..

Just pointing out that the current rear hinged doors on the latest vehicle are deemed a safety issue! Otherwise the manufactures wouldn't have bothered with the electronics to stop them being used when in motion,

my motorhome does have a seat next to the habitation door, but my door is front hinged so isn't a factor,

I consider these forums to be a good way of exchanging information to everybody benefit and not to get into a P---ing contestoh:

I've just checked the specs of the current Majestic range,

Rear hinges - 125, 155, 165, 175
Front hinges - 105, 115, 140, 145, 180, 195

Our 2010 Autoquest 180 also had rear hinges.

I always double-check windows, doors and lockers before driving so I'm not too worried about the safety issues.

We used to have Vintage cars for an Hobby, quite agree if you grabbed at a rear door opening when traveling the wind could drag you out thats how they got their name, the only one we had with rear hinged doors was a Hillman 14 1929 reg so safty reg's and seat belts were not invented then. Pete
