I'm just wondering whether anyone knows of any Spanish campsites which are offering Covid insurance. We can't travel until January, so the EHIC will be no good for us. I had read reports of the Andalusian Government providing Covid insurance, including repatriation, for foreign visitors, but it now appears that this applies only to establishments, mainly hotels, participating in the Government scheme, and not to all visitors to Andalusia.
I understand someone currently at La Manga, that insurance is available through the campsite, which refers people to the insurance company.
Is anyone aware of any other site which are offering something similar?
We normally travel around Spain in winter, but we're thinking that this year, we could base ourselves at a site for a couple of months and hire a car.
All info gratefully received. We're dreading the prospect of spending the whole of the winter in the UK 🌧🌧🌧

I'm not sure of the details. I believe Almafra is offering something with insurance. They are also doing discounts for long-term.

We haven't actually stayed on Camping Almafra. We do have a few friends who are regulars there, we have visited. It's a large full facility site, located between Albir and Benidorm. It is usually very popular in the winter.

We're booked into Alicante Imperium at Villajoyosa over the Christmas period.

When I booked it, I was assured that if I had to cancel and I gave them 72hrs notice, all I would lose out of the deposit would be €8.

I don't. know if that is any use to you

bellabee we are hoping to leave for Spain at end of November as usual and have managed to get insurance including COVID 19 from Avanti @ £465 approx for single trip up to 5months😊
Hope to see you down there sometime in new year🤞😊

Suggest you check with Avanti to make sure what they mean by Covid cover. This is an extract from the Avanti website........

"Covid travel insurance can ease the worries and what-ifs you may have when it comes to travel after lockdown. Embrace your next adventure, knowing we’ll be there 24/7 if the unexpected happens and you need a helping hand.

We understand that travel might feel different to what we’re used to right now . That’s where we come in. Covid cover is included with all our new policies, just as long as the FCO says it’s safe for you to travel."

Currently the FCO is still advising against all but essential travel to Spain. For a recent trip to France (we are almost at the end of our 2 weeks quarantine), I checked with my then current insurers (LV). They were emphatic that there would be no cover for any health condition if the destination was not on the FCO approved list...... unless the journey was essential and the reason for it had been agreed with them prior to travel. I cancelled the policy and got an partial refund.

After extensive searching, I only found one company offering medical (including Covid) cover to non-essential travel countries. It is expensive and is single trip if over age 69, with supplements for cover of pre-existing conditions. The company is one I had not previously heard of and apparently specialises in cover such as Journalists travelling to dangerous places. The company trades as Inforsure.com. If interested have a look at......

Thanks for mentioning this limitation s20hymer . I was not aware of this, as the trip we took was under a month. I just tried to get cover for a (hypothetical) couple aged 30 for 3 months with no pre-existing conditions to see what happened and the system gave me me a quote. So, I presume what they are prepared to offer is age/duration/pre-existing condition dependent. Looks as this will not be suitable for elderly Funsters heading off to Spain for the winter! :(

Thanks Millcourt I did realise the cover not valid if not recommended by FCO however I don’t think we are to concerned about cover for COVID as we are not intending going anywhere very highly populated and on balance the risk seems no worse than at home or better. 😊

Thanks for that but we live in southern UK and very low figures as with Spain the main areas for infection is in the bigger cities and towns. We tend to stay well away from them, as we go birding out in the sticks so choose remote places to stay so less chance of meeting people.😊

It was not just Covid cover that LV refused to cover for FCO non-essential travel destinations, it was ALL medical conditions. Most insurers I contacted offering "Covid Cover" restricted it to cover in non-essential travel locations only if there was no FCO restriction when the Policy was taken out and when there was no restriction at the time of outbound travel.

As I have found to my cost on a previous occasion with insurance, the time to check the "small print" carefully is before you buy not when trying to make a claim. Have you got confirmation from Avanti that all of your medical needs other than Covid are covered...... including the cost of repatriation should you unfortunately need it? Not wanting to cause undue alarm..... I am really interested in getting the best cover at a sensible cost for a trip we hope to make to Spain in January for a couple of months.

Thanks again you are correct they will not cover you if against FCO restrictions.
Luckily we have not purchased any yet and won’t be with them, a company that knows full well the places you intend travelling to as they ask the question, then go ahead and quote for the specified dates and times knowing currently it won’t cover you at all will take your money without putting that information in large print are despicable, especially in these COVID times.🤬🤬🤬

As far as I can see travel to Spain, Portugal or France is not advised byFCDO is not recommended so insurance is out and as far as we are concerned unless that changes by the end of November we will be wintering in the UK and touring here if we are allowed.😊

If you look at the health passport you can buy differing levels of cover👍😊

I can not make much sense of this health passport link. It seems to be a site promoting private health insurance and it is not obvious to me the extent to which this is a Portuguese Government initiative. It seems it may be just offering fixed price medical investigations at a limited number of private (not State) hospitals. Do please correct me if I have misunderstood what is on offer.

However all is not lost, perhaps, for a lengthy trip to Spain this winter. If you are willing to "self insure" for the unlikely and tragic event of needing medical repatriation (which can be very expensive if private air transport with medical staff in attendance is needed), you have EHIC cover for trips starting before the end of December AND it seems this will continue in Spain for the duration of the trip extending into 2021..... according to the FCO. I just hope local officials Spain are aware of this!!! The FCO reference to this can be found at........

(Scroll down the FCO web page.)

There does not seem to be a similar extension of the use of EHICs elsewhere in the EU, so if driving back through France (for example) after the end of December you will not have this health cover.

EHIC. If trip started before the 31st December card is valid until you return. Good luck if you need to explain it to someone who thinks it isn't though.

It’s all a bit of a minefield at the moment we are not in a hurry so will give it a bit more time before making any decisions.😊🤞🤞
