Some....good & bad!
Hi,
We recently acquired a motorhome which is equipped with a Huawei MiFi and antenna.
I know very little about this sort of voodoo stuff but I do know that it will need a sim if i'm going to use it.
Can anyone tell me how much data I would need to stream say ~3hrs of TV of an evening and do a bit of browsing etc?
Any recommendations for one? I was wondering if a top up type would be better than a contract or not?
Thanks for any insights.

Hi! I think about 1GB per hour of tv is a rough guide? There are lots of discussion/threads that debate the best value sims, & it depends if you are going to use it in the UK or abroad? We are now going to tether from my phone in the uk (I’ve got 70GB on a monthly contract with ID), & when we go to the eu, I think I will get the sim recommended by Carpmart ? On the recent thread that I can’t remember the name of? 😀 I’ll try & find it!

This is a great sim and works anywhere in EU and UK speak to the ever helpful Camino she will sort you out👍
😊

Thanks for the replies, it'll be just UK this year, maybe EU next year if it still exists!
£34 a month is too expensive for us so maybe I might just get a longer pole for the TV aerial LOL!

Cheers anyway

Try Smary, easy to switch off and on to save you paying for months you are not using it. Also Tesco and ASDA have good value deals. That said the major players O2, Vodaphone etc will probably give you better bandwidth for streaming but at a cost and perhaps contract.

I got a Smarty sim with my Motorhome WiFi fitting documents so if you have one why not try it for a month.

As above recon on 1gb per hour. If you have a fire stick look on YouTube or Google for easy to reduce the picture quality and switch off unnecessary options which eat up data, you’ll be amazed how much difference it makes and you’re unlikely to notice much picture degradation.

TV seems to be the killer on roaming internet. I dont watch TV, even at home, definitely not when away and the maximum I have used in a month on my unlimited plan is 7Gb. When at home I use the landline based internet so only about 1Gb on my phone.

If you were to winter in Spain for three months you would probably watch more tv with the longer dark nights and with fair data limits on UK sims it would be very hard to use your phone allowance within the limits🤔😊

Just had two days cycling but based on the camping in the forest site near Marlborough and my son went through 18gbs in two evenings !! I'm currently using a 20gb for £12 Giffgaff (O2) sim, I think I need to upgrade !!

Yes to be honest I’m thinking of using it at home as well it really does work well and always seems to have strong signal.
Marlborough not far from us half an hour up the road to Savernake it’s nice up there😊

I dont know. I usually winter in the UK (unfortunately) and dont watch TV then.
I do watch quite a few films on my large projection screen, but being old fashioned I buy them on DVD/BluRay (many bookcases full). I also watch in the MH but on a smaller screen with a terabyte drive.

You'll need unlimited. Tv , especially 1080+, HD, or 4K shifts it at a phenomenal rate 9Gb /hr is usual. even going in & reducing it it still uses lots.

You don't get black & white for that.

I have just got an idmobile sim on a 1 month contract with unlimited data for £16pm. This allows teathering so the telly will be streaming using that connection method from my phone.
It just arrived today so not had a chance to try it yet.
Any problems I'll let u know.

Not sure what your settings are, but we watch tv through the Firestick at about 1GB per hour. Used to have a 100 GB contract, & my husband likes the tv, so I had to keep a close eye!

I've found what looks like 40Gb per month for £10 from ID Mobile.
Here
If I forget the TV idea and just use for browsing etc, would that be a good deal?

I'm not a fan of IDmobile, I had a cashback deal with them and never got all the cash back paid. I found customer service awful. However, they have an offer on at the moment, 60gb for £10 if your interested, yes probably sufficient for just browsing. However for £16 they have an unlimited sim, but you have to sign up for 2 years :(. I would check that the service is not restricted in any way before signing, (similar to Vodafone's lower cost 'unlimited' (NOT)

Think i'll try Smarty, thanks for all your help guys (y)

I just tried out my new Smarty sim on the 3 network in the lakes, it did not work for streaming TV, put the wifes EE sim in and it did work

Tesco 2 year Unlimited Sim only - currently £17.50/month and will provide 2 months unlimited data in any rolling 4 month period in Europe.

Cheers

They do a 60gb for £10 a month on their website however you can get unlimited even cheaper if you buy it from Mobiles.co.uk and do 'cashback by redemption' (very easy) which will give a £72 discount so it works out at £9 a month; there's also 50gb option for £7.50 a month after cashback. Also if you go to Mobiles.co.uk via Topcashback you 'might' qualify for a £10 payout from them too.

You’ll find that with all the cheaper resellers like ASDA, Tesco, Smarty etc and specially with the unlimited deals. Speed and bandwidth throttled by the carriers, despite what the resellers say.

Not noticed any throttling with the Tesco SIM tbh.

I have three Tesco Unlimited Sims and one Vodaphone Max unlimited. The Voda max (which is supposed to be "Guaranteed unthrottled") consistently provides slower speeds than the Tesco Sims.

Voda is used for the house broadband. Tesco are used for phones and Van broadband.

Cheers

Good to know re Tesco sim as I’m cancelling the ASDA one soon.
