Any recommendations for touring and camping in the Scottish western isles?
We only have two weeks but I'm happy to hang out for longer in a beautiful island than hammer the miles.
Any ideas appreciated.

We prefer Mull as it is small enough to see everything but big enough to have a range of things to see. We've been there twice and can easily spend 2 weeks there. Skye is nice but more rugged and, in our opinion, less varied regarding scenery compared to the size of the island.

What time of year will you be there @Jac Sprat ?

Hi. I think you have to make your mind up whether to do the inner isles or get yourselves out to the outer Hebrides for the 2 wks...
If you stay in then Arran mull and skye should keep you busy..
If you head to the outer id get the ferry to Barra and make your way up the butt of lewis

Second this. Or the Outer Hebredis.

On our wish list ... just need the time to get there, unwind and explore without rushing.

Arran is rather wonderful too. But if you have time Mull would be my first choice. Most beautiful beaches. You could get foot ferry over to Iona.

Skye is getting busy, Harris and Barra for us.

Not done too many Islands as of yet, but Mull would my fav so far. Arran as suggested is beautiful too. (y)

Depending on time you can catch the ferry from Ayr to arran. Then the ferry off of the other side to the kintyre peninsular about 4 miles across to kenicraig catch the ferry to islay and Jura then catch the ferry back to Oban for the ferry to mull if you want a loop trip .

Orkney. We spent 10 days there last year and it was not enough. Lots to do and to see plus we used the subsidised ferries to island hop. Lots of scenic wild camping with no restrictions signposted or otherwise.

Start with bute it's often missed and is actually a lovely island , then mull , you can then do a day trip to iona, Skye is beautiful and if you like hill walking cycling etc then it's ideal. Plenty wild camping available on each of them.

Just on our way now stopped overnight at Mansfield - 'Tall trees' campsite nice quiet site with dog area. Off to ^Gretna today through the storm. Which is the best route to Mull and Skye ?

Don’t be afraid to use the big Green Wellie as a stop over.
Carefull parking away from any fridge units and you’ll have a good nights sleep.

Very friendly helpful staff, we asked to stay out of courtesy but you do t have to.

We went to Skye but I’m sure missed half of it

Happy traveling :D

No further recommendation required!

I think if I had 2 weeks from Norfolk I’d go to Arran, and if you get bored on Arran come back to the mainland and do South West Scotland, Port Patrick and Machars Peninsula.

Skye is a pretty big island, and we have spent many happy holidays there. But even from West Yorkshire it’s an over nighter on the way. Plus last time we went, after a 7 year gap, it was appreciably busier particularly round the Uig peninsula and particularly with coach traffic.

But if you’ve never been to Skye, it is the sort of place you have to do at least once at some point in your life, it’s busy because it is so spectacular and everyone wants to go!

We go from Glasgow to Oban via Loch Lomond.

We come back via Glen Etive.

When in Mull, go to Inverlussa mussel farm for the best mussels I've ever tasted.

In Skye, go to the Oyster Shed near the Talisker distillery for more sea food.
