We are looking to buy our first motorhome but we have 2 large dogs that we would like to travel with us. We need a motorhome that has a large garage that also has access to the main cabin so the dogs can have their beds out of the way but still join us as and when they want. We think we need a 6 berth motorhome any suggestions would be grateful, dogs are Saint Bernards.

Don’t know the answer to your question, but Welcome to this fine place.
Forgive me for stating the obvious, but don’t forget that it is now a legal requirement to have dogs properly harnessed while on the move.

Thank you Podney, I did not know that but can now include that requirement in my selection.

Are you licenced for heavier motorhomes....... Over 3500kg.
C1 category on your licence.
I'm thinking two St Bernard's won't be far off the weight of two adults which will hammer your available payload.

Leaving the fact the dogs must be secured in transit...... Some MH have a rise and fall feature on rear island bed with garage underneath and additional access door from home to garage.
Best go to a large MH show and crawl all over everything to get ideas.

We were parked near a Niesmann and Bischoff Arto when the guy got out opened the garage door and two ginormous Newfoundlands bounded out. They (the humans) had kitted the garage out to make a very comfortable kennel for them. They’d put an opening window into the garage door to allow ventilation and light in.

I doubt there’d be much room left in the garage for much else though.

Good luck in your search.

Seen that before where the garage has been converted into a kennel, with a opening barred, "window" for the woofs to look out of when they're in.

Thank you for your advice, we have seen a roofer team which allows access but I would like 2 or 3 other motorhomes to choose from. I do have a licence to drive up to 7.5 tons and will probably carry on the search today.

We have always traveled with 2 German Shepherds. Our present MH is a Carthago, it had a sliding door under the rear bed which opened into a small wardrobe. We have removed the wardrobe to give direct access to the garage. We have also made an aluminium gate so that we can have one of the external garage doors open when parked up and the dogs can live in the garage and see what’s going on outside. They do not travel in the garage and are tethered to the seat belts on the dinette seats.

I agree with the last post. To spend a lot money on a M/H just to accomadate dogs is wee bit extravagent. The wet dog syndrome never goes away. We love dogs but do not want to live cheek by jowl with them.
