Since 2011 (so a bit of a newbie)
We made the move from blue to green last year, but since then have had some seriously stinky problems. When we were on blue we never had a stench, but on green either my wife is doing some seriously nasty number 2's (couldn't possibly be me) or we are using the wrong brand of green toilet liquid.

Any suggestions much appreciated, or could anyone recommend where to get some nostril grips from?

Clean out your cassette thoroughly and start to use bio washing tabs. Some of the scented ones are very good

Really. How many tabs would you recommend?

I did do a really thorough clean a few weeks back, but might do that again if it would help. Any ideas for something I could maybe soak in it to make it like new?

We have always had SOG's on our vans and never used any chemicals.

We just use a single one. As they are much cheaper than a bottle of Elsan or equivalent fluid, we empty it at every opportunity so the cassette may be 20% full or less at times......a carton of 24 costs approx £3 at Aldi.

If you like you can also use them to clean clothes ..... obviously not the one that goes down into the toilet!

Bio washing tabs, no sog. But we always use sites and empty every day, also all traces of the blue must be gone or the tabs won't work.

What brand of green are you using? Was told elsan green worked better than blue

We went over to the Elsan Green Organic last year as you can use it in the flush as well . We have a PVC so less weight. Nick does the toilet. He has found that you need the full 120ml capful. We have been using our own facilities completely so he empties every 2 days. He says it’s OK. Obviously the time taken to convert to slurry rather depends on the type of stool you and your good lady produce! The Bristol stool chart is most interesting, but I’d say that wouldn’t I ?

We did try the Aldi/Lidl Bio tablets and Nick was not happy, his sense of smell is poor and mine is like a bloodhound so it wasn’t a job that I wanted him to stop doing.

I have a mild perfume aversion, so solutions involving scented laundry products are a no no for me

Elsan Green works great, i just use it as directed on the bottle

I think my wife (ever the frugal one) got something from Aldi or similar. I think we might have tried the Elsan one too, but can't swear to it, as my job is just to transport the stuff to the appropriate drop off point and the wife administers the chemicals, which clearly I can't be trusted to do.

I sound like Nick. My sense of smell is hopeless whereas my wife can smell things from several fields away.

Looks like I have lots to check out on the next trips including Elsen organic, these bio tabs (definitely an interesting option) and I need to do more research on this SOG - and will definitely ensure my dear lady is putting in the full capful as we are from Yorkshire, so frugality comes naturally :)

I've been using Elsan Green since earlier this year and very pleased with it. Cheaper than Theford products, does the job without the pungency of blue liquid and I can empty the cassette into my fosse septique if necessary(y)

I'm genuinely perplexed at anyone that is still using any chemicals in their toilet cassette, boys and girls wake up it's so 1960's.

Just no need.

So the answer is WATER

You've just got used to the horrendous stench 🤣

Or just empty it often, better still add a SOG and empty it often

We use Bio clothes wash liquid.
£1 / litre @ Aldi or Lidl.
But we buy it in U.K. before we go.
Small bit into cassette after emptying.
Job done. !!! 🤪 excuse pun.
No details, but everything dissolves to soup.
Mitch.

In recent times I've been using the cheapo Aldi green stuff, seems to work ok. This van came with a SOG. But the fan? Has never worked and blew a fuse when I reconnected it. I may look into it one day. In the meantime, I jus t stock up from Aldi whenever I see it.

What's a SOG?
A SOG is the trade name for a ventilation system that sucks the smell out of you cassette. Thetford sell one for their toilets that does a similar thing. Both our motorhomes have had the Thetford version, although we did not know that when we bought them.

As others have said we also use bio clothes washing liquids or sachets from Aldi or Lidl. But these rely upon "good" bacteria to work, and the longer you use them the better they get. So it is essential that you get rid of all traces of the blue stuff before using them and also make sure you never clean the inside with bleach.

Wanted to send a massive thanks to everyone who gave suggestions.

We gave the Bio tablet thingys a try from Aldi, as many suggested and all I can say is wow!!!!!!!!!

So much cheaper and they actually worked better. So massive thanks for that top tip.

Also, thanks for the tip on more regular emptying. I know that is, I am sure, pretty obvious to everyone, but stupid me was trying to minimise my s**t carrying workload, and so was leaving it until the jackpot light went off.

This last few weeks I've been emptying it at every opportunity and it has been so much better, and the side benefit is I no longer leave in fear of the dreaded orange light.

We use BioMagic, our van had a Sog fitted by previous owner but we have never fancied using it,

The trouble I found with the SOG in our full timing van, is that the fan comes on when you open the flap - great, unless it’s 3am! The only alternative is not to open the flap at night, but then that’s not very nice in the morning! Also, if you only use the SOG, it still whiffs quite badly on emptying!🤮
