Pickup out first family motorhome next week and wondering which club if any to join? Caravan club, camping & caravan club or neither & just use the smaller guides, search for sites etc.

Are the insurance/breakdown offers worth joining for? Is it worth joining before I buy insurance or not much in it.

Planning on using in U.K. & Europe from small quiet/wild sites to busier sites that young children (age 3,6&9) will find pools & entertainment.

I'm know both have pros & cons just wondering what's best for a young family, if there's any difference.

Thanks

If your m/h is over 3500 Kgs, then the C&CC may be worth considering as their RAC scheme covers any size any weight.

For Europe, ACSI book would be a good guide for both discount site prices and information on site facilities ie. swimming pools etc.

Back in UK, both clubs are imo expensive, although the C&CC due offer family deals, which would benefit a family of five. I'm not sure that the CC do. They both have a network of small sites CC call then CL sites, and C&CC call them CS sites.

Have a look at both on the internet.

I hope this helps, in the end it's your choice.

Enjoy your camping.

I would hang fire until you decide who you are insuring your motorhome with and whether you need specialist home insurance for extended trips away form home. You can get quotes without being a member. We have the motorhome insured via the CC and the house via C&CC! Not ideal but it all about the cover we want.

We joined both the Caravan Club and the Camping and Caravan Club as we couldn't decide between the two.

There are loads of comments on here, good and bad, about the rules, regulations, wardens, friendliness and costs but to be honest, we personally have yet to have a bad experience and everywhere we have been via the clubs has, in our opinion, been value for money.

In reality we have used the CC sites a lot more than the C&CC but that is mainly as a result of taking delivery of our motorhome in late September and the CC having better autumn and winter site availability in the areas we wanted to visit.

We have also used other touring sites and wild camped but find the CC and C&CC websites useful for local information when planning and have more than saved the cost of our memberships by using the discounts available to members over the last 4 months.

A bit complicated due to this being our first Motorhome and NCD's and allocations so having had quotes we didn't insure the motorhome via either club but did use the CC insurers and made a significant saving due to being a member.

All in all, being a member of both has worked out for us and can't see any reason why we wouldn't rejoin both when renewal time comes around.

We use the CC for our ferry bookings and save more than the annual fee every year.

We have been members of both main clubs for over 40yrs.
There are things we like and dislike within each.
The 5van cl's of the CC are more likely to be more MH accessible than the C&CC cs's.
The weekend 'Meets' organised in the C&CC do not necessarily have to be booked in advance which is very useful when you know the coming weekend is going to be a fine one. Those organised in the CC have to be booked and, I believe, paid for in advance.

Hi

Caravan Club:

We save the membership on M6 Toll discount
Its easier to book ferries online, right up to almost last minute

For Breakdown cover, I bank with Nationwide and use their breakdown cover (over 3,500kG)

I hope this helps?

Like @Eddystone, member of both clubs, just not as long. Generally, I prefer Caravan Club sites, but my favourite local (ish) site just happens to be C&CC, so gets more of my custom than any other.

Pros and cons to each !

As regards insurance, some companies and brokers (I use Alan Blundell) will mirror your NCD built up on your car (if you have any) and subsequently build up on your Moho.
Breakdown cover is worth shopping around for and could be inbuilt with insurance.
I've been a member, on and off with C &CC but because I never used except ferry booking (it saved me nearly the cost) until they fouled up badly and that wiped out my 10% discount. They apologised for nearly ruining my holiday but thankfully the great staff at Eurotunnel sorted it (at a cost). Never renewed.
There are advantages and disadvantages but probably more being a member but I don't use either these days

We camp in London: CC Abbey Woods - easy access to London Bridge/Charing Cross.
We camp in the Lakes: CCC Keswick - right on the edge of Derwent Water.
We camp in Scotland: CCC Rosemarkie - on the edge of the sea, with clear views of dolphins swimming.
We camp in Scotland: CC Bunree - on the edge of the sea, with clear views of mountains.
Both clubs offer similar insurance quotes and discounts on ferries (well worth having in my opinion).

When we had children to contend with, CCC offering Temporary Holiday Sites (cheap, safe, reasonable facilities) were superb and a good way of touring. CCC offering weekend meets which didn't need booking provided easy local access for our kids to meet and make friends.

Basically, we pay for both clubs (£100 pa? = £2 per week = 30p per day) and use what we want where we want it.

We have NationWide FlexPlus current account which effectively costs £4 per month and offers "free" European breakdown insurance on MHs up to 8.5m/7T as well as "free" holiday insurance, phone insurance etc.

MH insurance is looked at each year in order to get the cover we require: for a few years we needed business cover and that needed more careful investigation. For the past couple of years, CC has offered to beat the "current insurer" by £25 but SAGA has been OK for us. In 2017 that will change, as I anticipate adding my grown-up kids to the policy. Usually, hunting around takes approx 2h.

Enjoy - Gordon

PS your friends, or folk on here, would be happy to "recommend" you to one of the clubs and get a £10 reward. "Recommending" you to change to a NW account attracts £100 for you and the recommender!
