Just booked our ferry, planning to head east this time rather than south although my inner magnet wants me to go south!! Just wondering where to park at Newhaven Dock for the night before sailing? Im sure I've seen info on here but can't find it!
Any suggestions..... Ferry is at 9.00am

If you arrive at Newhaven before 10pm there is lots of seafront parking just along at Seaford. Then you can move into the loading lines. We did overnight on the seafront but were maybe lucky to get away with it!

Thanks Annie, think we’ll probably stay on the port side if they still allow, not the quietist place but hey!

40 years caravanning. New A-class Moho owners
You’ve just brought back a memory from over 40 years ago. Newly married, it was our first trip ‘abroad’ with a car. Young and adventurous, we slept in the car somewhere near the docks with an alarm clock on the dash so we didn’t oversleep. From Dieppe we drove down to Estartit on the Costa Blanca again sleeping in the car overnight and no toll roads. Great days. Whilst on holiday we met two couples who were flying back to Heathrow to then drive back to Aberdeen. Enjoy your holiday when it comes. Mike

Yes I was only suggesting the seafront for your evening meal maybe while you wait for 10pm, should you arrive early.

All seafront parking is now banned for Motorhomes in Seaford (we live there), so you take your chances with that. The Hope inn allows vans to overnight if you spend a little money in there or if you don’t they may charge a nominal fee, alternatively the ferry car park allows you to overnight.

That’s a shame if you cannot even park up for a walk or something in the evening.

We've always parked overnight at the port in the 'short stay', 'pick up' parking behind the fence on the right hand side of the approach (i.e. facing towards the departure gates.) Drive in as though to get in the embarkation lanes but in the right most lane, turn in to the parking and settle down for the night. This is OK with the port staff because nobody has ever approached us on the numerous occasions we have stayed there and it is clear that LD/DFDS staff park there and leave shortly after we hunker down from the late evening arrival or in anticipation of the 10am departure. Newhaven is our port of choice for western France, Northern Spain/Portugal.

I know it’s so annoying! Before there was officially a 12 hour limit but we have stayed the occasional night to and from home and enjoyed it. Now Motorhomes are officially banned which is so knee jerk, it is not as if there were dozens parking there. Ironically you can park in one spot on the other side of the road towards The Buckle but that puts you right in front of houses and we try not to pee off residents generally speaking ;)

I would recommend the Hope Inn. It is really close to the ferry port, in fact it overlooks the harbour entrance. When we have stayed there we have not always eaten, although we always go in for a tipple. I have never felt that we had to eat or that we would need to pay. They have always been very friendly and welcoming.

Ditto. We’re there now. Quiet, as it is at the end of a cul-de-sac. Dog walkers territory. Pub closes at 19:00 on a Sunday night. We got our Sunday roast for just under a tenner.

Hi all.
Apparently the Hope Inn now has height barriers so no go for motorhomes.
The Brighton C&MC wants £43 to park on a bit of grass for a night and everywhere else in Sussex has either height barriers or no overnighting rules. DFDS have told me they do not allow overnighting anymore.
Anyone know of a 'reasonably' priced overnight stop for the Newhaven ferry?
Thanks

No barriers when we parked there two weeks ago. We did book a meal before we arrived, and the landlady came out to the car park when we arrived to see if we were a FLT :)

There’s a great overnight spot just 50 metres further on. It’s a manned car park with two large grassy areas for campervans. £10 overnight, no facilities.

So “free” with something reasonable from the pub, or £10. Take your pick. Both are 5 minutes from the boat.

There's a height barrier which is opened when/if the parking guy is in his kiosk.
Also, if parking that side of the river it's worth checking the opening times displayed on the swing bridge or you could have an anxious time waiting in a long queue for it to finish operating so that you can cross to the ferry terminal side.

Thanks all. Great feedback.
According to Search for Sites the overnight spot past the Inn is only open until 17:00.
Quite happy to NOT be FLT at the Inn, so will book ahead if possible.

We enquired 2 years ago when DFDS suspended parking because of work in the Docks and Car Park. We weer advised [by Premier Inn Reception Staff who couldn't let us park, even if we booked a room!] that it was possible to park at B&Q as long as you were discreet and away before the store opened. That was in caravan days so not aware of Britstop, Park4 Night et al Apps at that stage.

Might be worth a ring to the store and a £10 bung in the Staff Tea Fund? Otherwise, a 'Rest Break' in one of the laybys on the A23 around Pease Pottage [there is a pub just off the exit for the M&S Store, it's where we stopped at about 5am to find the slow puncture in Tig ...] less than 1 mile from A23 and at that ungodly hour, there were only a couple of [staff?] cars parked Possibly in Britstops or worth a call to see if they can accommodate you and then leave yourself 2.5 hours to reach the Port and clear check in.

Just call them to ensure they haven’t built a barrier, but I doubt it!
