Can't say too much about this as it would be very easy to identify my source and get the person into trouble. There is a brewery in the uk that is up and running and supplying a number of outlets. Most barrelled beers as you know have a short 'shelf life'. The exception being cider that apparently lasts about 12 months. When this brewery started back up it had barrels and barrels of outdated beer that was pretty useless. The brewery owner ordered for these outdated barrels to be sent out to the 'outlets'. His attitude was 'well let them drink it, if anyone complains then see if they send it back.' They even went as far as to change the sell by date labels on the beer. As yet I haven't heard how the beer went down with drinkers but I would suspect that other brewery's might try the same trick.

Keg beer will keep a long time just like cans do. I suspect the traditional beers are the ones that don't keep long, the ones that they use 'hand pumps' for.

That's correct. Real ale will only last a few weeks once tapped.

The Only "real" ale (un-gassed) that last any longer is known as "Bright" and that only increases its life by a few more days. It hoever does not need to be stillaged before sale. At Sea years ago we had "keg" Tennants, for the ships bar, onetime the Chief Steward had stored later stock in front, By the time we got to the last kegs some of it was a year or more old. Still Drinkable? (well it was Tennants, so that was always debatable anyway)

Apparently a number of bigtime breweries have started brewing beer. It takes about 3 weeks for the beer to be ready so this might be suggestive of future opening dates.
