We are looking at part exchanging our MH. We received a few estimates from various dealers over the phone so not based on seeing the van. Just placed a holding deposit on a van. As an afterthought, i was wondering if the bits and pieces that we have added to our van, such as additional coats hooks, couple of cargo nets and pullout basket rack for food tins would have to be removed or give the dealers an excuse to lower their estimate? Appreciate that they may try to lower their telephone valuation for more major things but I’m probably just overthinking things lol.

Any advice as to what to watch out for when part exchanging?

Generally remove anything that you want to keep/use in your next MH, so long as you can make good any holes etc that will be on show, or replace the items you remove with something else, they won't detract form the PX value unless it looks like it's been massacred or shot with a pellet gun bits! I have a tea/coffee/sugar caddy set on its own shelf, and it's been in several MHs, it leaves 2 screw holes but I just put up some stick-on hooks to cover them, same with other stuff including my 1970s kitchen roll holder - you can hide some holes by putting small matched discs over them, look in hidden places for ones that you can re-use where they aren't seen and carefully warm them up and lift off with a razor blade then use them were you need them.

For bigger stuff it really depends, we moved an awning from one PVC to another and our refillable gas system has had many new 'homes' since we bought it in 2009!

Hi Mindy Girl

thanks for your response. It’s just small things and we were going to leave them as they are probably useful for the next owners. 😃

The main thing is that you don't remove items that the sales team counted in the trade in value.

Personally, if it’s going to a dealer I will remove everything I have added if I will be using it on the next one.

I wouldn’t leave holes everywhere but dealers aren’t renowned for giving great PX prices.

Take anything useful or saleable, When I traded in my first Harley I took everything I could off it including the panniers, seat and sissy bar. I left it as standard as I could, then sold the stuff I didn't want or didn't fit the new Harley. "Every little helps"

Hey, apologises to Minxy Girl for the misspelling. I hadn’t noticed that predictive text had changed your name. Good tip about the hidden matching discs.

Thanks everyone for your responses. We don’t really need any of the few small accessories that we added. Probably more hassle to fill in the holes. More concerned that by leaving them, that it would have a negative effect on valuation.

I remove EVERYTHING. I always have items fitted so they are easily removed without any damage. A local motorhome dealer takes all part exchanges into the workshop. Every extra is removed and either resold to a new buyer or on second hand websites.
In a normal year he can achieve revenue exceeding £10,000.
